Lots of fun with the grandkids, but it's good to get back to our own schedule too

Once again, Ruth took the grandkids over across the road to the river yesterday morning to look for critters. They sure do love doing that!

Then we had an early lunch and hopped in the little red car to take them back home. It was great fun for 2 days, but it's also nice to be able to give them back to their parents!

Here's a short video clip of Cameron trying to catch a snake...

Missed!

He eventually got it, and sure enough it bit him. These snakes are not poisonous, but they can still leave a mark! I don't think it will slow him down though.

We think this is some kind of beetle larvae.

Then we drove down to Ottawa and the Rock Balancing Project near Remic Rapids. Back in the 1980's, this guy decided to start balancing rocks by the shoreline, and some of them are really good. Apparently they are all dismantled before winter and then he builds new ones again the following spring. I guess everybody needs a hobby!

Looking towards downtown from Remic Rapids.

Balanced rocks.

On the opposite side of the river is the city of Gatineau, Quebec.

Cameron is wearing Ruth's hiking boots because his shoes were soaking wet from trying to catch snakes!

Hmm, maybe a storm coming

Parliament buildings in the distance.

Definitely a storm coming.

Fortunately, we made it back to the little red car before the rain came down.

The little red car was getting down to a 1/4 tank or so, and so I stopped to put some gas in at $0.97 CAD per liter ($2.79 USD per gallon) and it took $21 CAD ($16 USD) to fill it up. That amount would have hardly moved the gas gauge in the motorhome!

And good thing it gets great mileage... we've already put almost 1,000 kms (620 miles) on it. We always find that we do a ton of driving when we come back to Ottawa.

Back at Lindsey and Justin's, the kids were quick to show us their chickens! A few months ago, the family decided they wanted their own eggs. Justin is a skilled carpenter, and he built them a nice chicken coop, and they got some baby chicks.

Yep, that's a nice chicken house.

Like any hobby, they aren't doing it for the "free" eggs. In fact, I bet the eggs will be very expensive when all is said and done. But, they're having fun doing it, and the kids love it. Another couple of months and the chicks should be old enough to start laying eggs.

We were going to stop in to see Ruth's dad, but time was getting short and we wanted to still get our power walk in, plus the fact that he goes to eat dinner at 4:30pm so it won't have given us very much time for a good visit. As it was, it was 4:45pm by the time we got back to the house. We will go see him on Thursday.

We had lots of fun with the kids, but we are back on schedule today with some peace and quiet. Sunny day, with a pleasant high of 22C (71F).

Justin did an amazing job on their chicken house and those young chickens love it. :-)

  2. Finally a good deal on Amazon.CA. I will have to pass because I already have 5 of them. I am having Amazon shopping withdrawal because I can't get to my US post office box that is only a mile away. Darn border closed.

    1. Yeah Amazon.CA doesn't have a lot of great deals unfortunately. I doubt that you are the only one missing the ability to access your US post office box. Amazon in the US has some incredible deals, even when you add on the exchange rate!

    1. So do we! This was our second year going to see the rocks. Our first time was back in the fall of 2013. We went this time because we knew that Cameron and Sadie would enjoy it and we didn't think they had been before and we were right on both accounts. :-)

  4. Like you said it's always fun to visit with the grands but it is always nice when they go home. Like Kathy says, "That's why women have children when they're young because bit by bit you lose your patience." Good thing Cameron wasn't in the southwest. Most of those snakes are poisonous.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. Not only to you not always have as much patience but you also don't have as much energy to keep us with them when you get older. We thought we had lots of energy but we quickly realized that we don't have as much as we thought we did when it comes to keeping up with Cameron and Sadie.

I doubt that Cameron would try his hand at picking up a poisonous snake. He knows his snakes pretty good and luckily we don't have any poisonous ones around here.

  5. Love those balancing rocks! What a skill to create such art! Good that there's no lack of things to do and see with the grandkids in that area!

    1. It certainly takes quite the skill for sure to balance those rocks and to do it in such a way that you are actually making something out of them. Artists have a very creative mind.

No, there definitely no lack of things to do in the Ottawa area with the grandchildren, and most of them are free and away from the general public.

    1. We really enjoyed them too! We went once a number of years ago and that's why we wanted to take Cameron and Sadie this time, we figured they would like them too and they did. :-)

  7. The balanced rock site is SO COOL! I ride by one place where there is a very small grouping of balanced rocks that change their pattern from time to time, and I always enjoy seeing it. I have no idea who does it, but I am always amazed at what they can do. Cameron is brave to catch snakes. No thank you! Hopefully he knows which are venomous so he doesn't get more than he bargained for!

    1. They sure are! Every year this guy creates something new and different out of the rocks. This was our second year visiting them. We are totally amazed how this guys does it too, such a creative mind for sure.

Cameron just lives for snakes, bugs and spiders. He doesn't seem afraid of them at all. Luckily there are no poisonous snakes around here.
