Highlights of a fantastic four months touring Mexico... part 2

Okay... if you missed part 1, you really want to go back and check that out first.

https://www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2020/03/highlights-of-fantastic-four-months.html

Many people think of Mexico as "beaches". But there is so much more to Mexico, and we think the vast majority of the good stuff is actually in the interior.

So part 1 left off at the end of January at Valle de Bravo... one of our favorite places. We continued on through Cuernavaca to the Xochicalco ruins where we found a great overnight spot nearby...

Highlight #11 was the great overnight spot we found!

Highlight #12 was sunrise the next morning!

We spent a few days just south of Acapulco, but the real highlight that everybody enjoyed was at little known Playa Ventura...

Highlight #13 was the beach at Playa Ventura.

Highlight #14 was the wildlife around the campground at Playa Tangolunda, Huatulco.

Continuing down the coast, we ended up another little known spot... a dusty old beach restaurant called Buena Vista. I didn't get a photo because we were so busy eating. Highlight #15 was definitely the best shrimp we have ever had!

Highlight #16 was our visit to the indigenous town of San Juan Chamula, Chiapas.

Highlight #17 was our boat trip though the Sumidero Canyon.

These highlights are in chronological order. And it would be tough to rank them any other way because they are all highlights for different reasons. But certainly one of the top ranked highlights would be the work we did (and that some of you supported financially...you know who you are!) at the Hogar Infantil orphanage...

Highlight #18... working at the Hogar Infantil orphanage!

Highlight #19, Carnival at Ocozocouatla.

Highlight #20 at Hierve el Agua, Oaxaca.

Highlight #21... the amazing Alebrijes artists at San Martin Tilcajete.

Hard to believe that all of the above highlights on this page all took place during the month of February! What a great month that was!

Highlight #22... watching the daily antics of the Popocatépetl volcano from our base in Cholula.

As I said yesterday, our interactions with the local people were often the highlight of the trip. We were invited to park up in the little ejido village of Tuliman, and it turned out to be yet another highlight of the trip...

Highlight #23, having happy hour with the locals in the ejido of Tuliman.

Sometimes, the places we camped turned out to be highlights themselves...

Highlight #24, camped in a remote meadow at Mineral del Chico National Park.

Highlight #25, the waterfalls, caves, and PEOPLE at Tolantongo.

Highlight #26... the fantastic drive on Mexican highway 85.

Highlight #27... this great group of people!

There were a lot of bright spots on this trip... arguably in our opinion the best group trip that we have done in Mexico. However that doesn't mean there weren't some low points. We talk about that in the next blog.

  1. Wow you covered a lot of ground and many, many highlights. Loved the trip especially the indigenous runner I believe you visited her village? Or was that on someone's blog lol. I lost track.

    1. Yes, we certainly did cover a fair bit of ground but not too much that made it seem like we were always on the move. we were really able to enjoy each and every place that we stayed.

No, that was not our blog that you read about the indigenous runner, we might just happened to have visited that village though but not the runner.

  2. I agree with you. The interior is better. Cool nights and most of all, NO BUGS!

    1. We sure like to think that we took them all on a wonderful tour of Mexico. The group saw a lot of places that most people who visit Mexico have never ever seen, let alone even heard of. The group really enjoyed the trip and they are all sad to see it over. We are glad that you enjoyed it through our eyes. :-)

  4. Reading your blog is so enlightening and enjoyable! Great work and Greater Living!
Back in the mid 80's my brother and i spent about two weeks "exploring" in the Sierra Madres of Chihuahua Mexico! Driving around in my pickup, camping out and staying in peoples homes long before there were Air BnB! One of the best trips I've ever made to Mexico! I have an RV now, although I would have laughed at the idea then! Its just that right now the idea of starting out to travel anywhere in the US I think,is a bad idea, for everyone/anyone- if you are "safe" at home. Your situation is different and I have no doubt you will make the right decision for you ,as well as considering your journey's impact back to home in Canada on others. If you get to Central Texas and need to stop, contact me- We've plenty of parking space and water and electric hookups! Also sounds like you could probably diagnose some RV problems i have :)
    Vaya con Dios!

  5. You guys have had quite an adventure this year. If you hang around much longer we may get to wave to you on our way by!! We leave here on Wednesday and will be high tailing with plans for being in Texas on Thursday evening. I guess with all this social distancing there would be no sense in trying to meet up with you guys. We will get together sometime later when all is calmed down.

    1. Yep, we sure did! We even got to see some new places that even we hadn't seen before. We left this morning and as I am typing this we are sitting at the Texas Travel Centre outside of Laredo, Texas.

I hope your drive goes well and that you don't have any issues crossing either of the borders. Have a great trip back to Canada.
