I had passed out on that flight, and taken to hospital when we landed. All of my tests were fine, and they didn't tell us that anything positive came back that would have given us any indication as to what caused it.
Our time in Nova Scotia was fine, and we flew to Ottawa. Then, over the next two weeks I had several light headed moments. Nothing that lasted more than a minute, and not enough that I felt like I was going to pass out.
Enke the cat.
I haven't been drinking much alcohol, really only on weekends. But one evening I had one beer and two glasses of wine and the next morning, I woke up feeling like I had a hangover.
Then this past Saturday morning, I felt awful. Almost to the point where I couldn't stand up. I knew it was time to see a doctor.
The house where we are staying is located south of the city of Ottawa, and the choices would have been to go into one of the two major hospitals in the city, or to the much smaller hospital in the town of Kemptville. It would take about the same amount of time either way. We decided on the smaller hospital, and that turned out to be the right decision.
We waited until I felt well enough to get into the car, and Ruth drove me there about 9:30am Saturday morning.
There was hardly anybody there! Maybe two other people in the waiting room. I was processed right away and led into an observation room where a couple of ladies hooked me up to monitors and took some samples.
Pretty much the same procedure as what I went through in Barcelona. And then we waited. We didn't see a doctor until about two hours had passed and they had the test results.
The doctor was quite good though. And it helps that it wasn't busy. I was able to tell him the history of the whole story, and well as the bits about my cardiac health and the tests I had done in Malaysia.
I was trying to describe the symptoms and what I was feeling, but I only thought afterwards that the best way to describe it is that it feels like a really bad hangover!
Once again, the tests did not show any abnormalities. I mean at this point, we almost wished that they did!
We went over a bunch of stuff with the doctor, and he came to the conclusion that I have "dysautonomia"... a dysfunction of the autonomous nervous system. Sounds pretty serious, right?
Well it can be. It's not life threatening, but in some people it can be debilitating.
In my case, he thinks it is temporary, although it can take some time (possibly even weeks!) for the symptoms to completely disappear.
And what is the best treatment?
Hydration! Yes, dehydration is most of the cause of the symptoms. And yes, I've been trying to drink more water since that original incident on the plane, but still not enough. So I have to drink minimum two measured liters of homemade electrolyte solution spread evenly in sips throughout the day. And no alcohol or coffee because those are diuretics that cause the system to lose water. Until symptoms are gone, I am totally fine with that and will likely continue like that anyhow.
So, that was Saturday morning, and now it is Tuesday morning. Sunday morning didn't feel so good, but Sunday afternoon and evening were much better. Monday morning was not perfect, but better. And Monday afternoon and evening I felt totally fine and I even did a good workout. This morning? Again not perfect, but from the research I've done, mornings are worse for people with this condition.
And I've done a lot of reading about it the last two days. Some people really suffer, to the point where they can't lead a normal life. It's a bit scary. But others seem to go with the condition in remission for years at a time, with occasional flare ups.
What causes it? They don't really know!

Great deal on the popular JBL Go 3 Bluetooth Speaker.
And in Canada...
Oh my goodness! I am so glad that at least you are starting the path to get more information. And perhaps a second opinion? Glad that you are back in Ottawa so you can use your health insurance easier than being in a foreign country. Best wishes for continued improvements in your health and regain your ability to travel.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen. Kevin is doing his best to do everything that he can to improve his condition but it might take a bit of time.
DeleteHonestly we have always had good care anytime that we have had to consult a doctor outside of Canada and it hasn't bothered us in the least. Seeing any kind of specialist in Canada takes time to get an appointment and normally a referral from your own GP first which we don't have.
Knowing you, this will be temporary and you'll soon report that you no longer have any symptoms. Get well friend.
ReplyDeleteWe sure hope that you are right Chris because at the moment Kevin isn't enjoying this feeling at all.
DeleteWishing you a speedy recovery Kevin Garth
ReplyDeleteThanks Garth, we hope that he has a speedy recovery as well!
DeleteThat’s awful! You guys are so careful to eat less, exercise more, etc. I hope you can get yourself well hydrated and move past these symptoms. I’m surprised the Dr didn’t give you an IV to jump start the process.
ReplyDeleteThank you and yes, we always try to be very careful with what we eat and we are always very active but that doesn't always stop you from having health issues it just helps to keep a lot of them at bay. We are really glad that this has nothing to do with his heart, that really put Kevin's mind to rest, now he will work at trying to keep himself well hydrated. I guess the doctor didn't feel that he needed an IV at the time.
DeleteHope you get a full recovery and that these symptoms will go away in time ! Wish you the best "
ReplyDeleteThank you, we certainly hope so too!
DeleteWow, I have never heard of this, but I do remember when you had your fainting episode on the plane, you (and many readers) thought it was dehydration-related. So, everyone was onto something but just didn't know it was more than a one-time deal. I sure hope it's a temporary, passing condition and doesn't mean you'll never get to quaff a pint going forward!
ReplyDeleteWe also had never heard of this condition before and actually quite surprised that the doctor came up with this diagnosis because from reading about others that have this condition it has taken some of them years to find a doctor that was able to diagnosis their problem
DeleteKevin is doing whatever it takes to try to recover from this but it may take time and yes, he said he will probably just stop drinking altogether because once he feels better he does not want this to return.
I had the same symptoms for about six or more weeks. went through the same test and found nothing. My doctor findly said that it might hydration. I drank a lot of coffee during the day, so I quick drinking coffee. I try to drink 20 to 30 ozs of water a day and I have not had a problem for about three months. I believe it was not the coffee, but not drinking water.
ReplyDeleteWell this sounds promising providing that you had a condition much like Kevin. He actually doesn't drink coffee but a coffee substitue made from 100 percent chicory and even then only had two cups sometimes three throughout a day but I think you are right the main culprit is not drinking enough water which is what he is now trying to do. Hopefully he will improve more over the next two weeks, time will tell.
DeleteWishing you a full recovery and the symptoms go away.
ReplyDeleteThe description of the symptoms that also sound like Vertigo. It will feel like a hangover. I've experienced that often.
Stay Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
It is not vertigo, other than the dizziness he doesn't have any of the other symtoms that would signal vertigo and he definitely has no balance issues at all.
DeleteI also think it sounds like vertigo. I hope you feel better soon. Cheers
ReplyDeleteKevin says that it isn't vertigo, he has no balance issues and other than the dizziness none of the other symtoms match what he is feeling. Thank you, we hope that he is feeling better soon too.
DeleteLack of enough water and/or vitamin D can cause numerous health issues. Thats experience talking. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't think that he was drinking enough water but he was definitely getting lots of vitamin D. The doctor felt pretty strongly that his condition is this dsyautonomia and the more that Kevin reads about it and about others that have also been diagnosed with this condition the more he feels that this is indeed what he has. He is now drinking lots of water with electrolytes throughout the day and hopefully that will start to kick in and that he will start feeling like his old self again.
DeleteHaven't heard of that condition either but wish you a full recovery .All the best.
ReplyDeleteYes, this is a new one for us as well. We have never heard of this condition before or know anyone with this condition, now that the doctor has suggested that this could be Kevin's problem, he has been doing lots of reading about it and about others that have been suffering from this same condition and he is convinced that this is what he has. There doesn't seem to be a lot that can be done other than drinking lots of water and water with electrolytes, so that is what Kevin is doing and we will just see what happens, hopefully he will start to see some improvement over the next couple of weeks.
DeleteFeel better every day, Kevin.
ReplyDeleteThank you, this is what he is hoping for too!
DeleteI have become very sensitive to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, something that never used to be a problem. More water and electrolytes certainly help.
ReplyDeleteKevin has never had a problem with dehydration before either, I always said that he was like a camel! He is now making a very conscious effort to make sure that he is getting lots of water and electrolytes in him everyday and hopefully that will help. So far he hasn't felt any different but they say with this condition that it can take weeks before he will feel more like himself again or even longer, there is always the chance that he will never quite get back to his old self. Our fingers are crossed that he will.
DeleteHope things are well now after a few days of hydration.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Things hadn't been too much different all week, not as bad as last Saturday though. Yesterday, Kevin said was his best morning so far. He went away yesterday for his guys weekend away but got one of the guys to pick him up so that he didn't have to drive. Not sure how he is this morning though.
DeleteYikes! Hope you get better soon amigo.
ReplyDeleteThank you Doug! Kevin says that he thinks that he is very slowly starting to feel better so hopefully he will continue to improve.
