Getting ready to get back on the road. Headed for Greece!

Yesterday morning we were still parked in the lot near downtown Berat, so we took advantage of the location to stock up on a few things. No idea what's in store for the next few days, so it's good to be prepared.

We went back to our favorite butcher guy. He sold us the most delicious juicy pork chops last time, and so we bought four more, as well as one chunk that can be oven roasted. And a half kilo of ground beef as well.

Next up was our fresh chicken guy. He's a friendly guy, always apologizing profusely that he doesn't speak English. Using google translate, we explained that we were leaving but hoped to see him again in the spring. We bought a bunch of various chicken parts and Ruth roasted some of it for dinner. I commented that I don't think I've had such tender chicken.

And then to the Big Market grocery store. We've gotten to know the cashier girl there quite well. In fact it was kind of funny the other day when she asked if we spoke any other languages in Canada. Her English is okay, but not perfect and of course our Albanian consists of about fifteen words! I explained that French is the other language in Canada, and she had thought it was Spanish. It turns out she speaks Spanish! So we had a nice little conversation with her in Spanish!

With Max's fridge and cupboards full, we moved back to the same campground we had been at the week before. Only for a one night stay. This way, we can do another load of laundry, have showers, charge our batteries, and use our electric heater since the temperature was going down to 1C (34F) last night!

One of our readers had asked the other day if we could take a photo of how Max's electric drop down bed operates. But it's difficult to show in pictures, so we took a video for you as we were getting ready for bed last night. The video is only 38 seconds long, so that is how long it takes to turn our living space into the bedroom! Turn up your volume...

We have woken up to a beautiful sunny day. It's only supposed to last until lunchtime tomorrow, but we'll take it! We're headed for Greece, but we're not in a rush... we just want to get moving. We will probably not cross the border until tomorrow morning.

And in Canada...

    1. We are pretty excited about heading into Greece as well, it's a new country and an new culture for us.

It is sort of fun shopping for groceries in a different country, especially when you don't have a good grasp on the language. Buying the meat and our fruits and veggies from the little shops is the most fun. We only stock up on the staples at the actual grocery store.

We love our bed and how quick it is to set it up and put it away. :-)

  2. I love the bed, is there a ladder? Did you ever get your package? Safe travels and enjoy the brief sunny weather.

    1. Yes, there is a ladder but we don't use it, we have each found an easy way on getting up and into bed without it.

No, we did not get our package. We may try reordering it when we are in Greece, if we know we are going to be in a certain area for a reasonable length of time.

  3. Fantastic! Out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of that bed? A tall friend of mine wants to know... ;)

    1. The bed is approximately 135 x 195 cm (4.4 x 6.4 ft). Kevin is 5'11 and has no issues with the length.

  4. Oooooh, a butcher AND a chicken guy! I love that and you can bet we'll be hunting them down while we are in Berat! We saw the Conad grocery store on Google Maps, but you are saying Big Market is your preference? We are looking forward to our time there, but we won't order anything because we'd like to get in and out fairly quickly. :) Thanks again for all the great info you provide!

    1. We will have to send you the directions for the butcher and the chicken guy. We haven't seen many shops that sell fresh chick but there are a number of different butchers there. Yes, we prefer Big Market to the Conad and there is also a Spar store with a Jumbo shop in the downstairs but this is on the edge of the downtown area.

      No, don't order anything, lol!

    1. I don't have a break down of the weight of the meat but for the 1/2 kg (1.1 lbs) of fresh ground beef with the 4 big pork chops and small pork roast, totalled 1400 lek ($16.60 CAD, $13.10 USD) and the chicken, which was 4 skinless/boneless breasts, one full double breast with skin and bone and 2 full chicken legs, it was 1320 lek ($1.65 CAD, $12.40 USD) I hope that helps.
