Sherman's 10 year old batteries are still doing fine

This last few days of dry camping have been a test of Sherman's now 10 year old Trojan batteries. It was in March of 2010 that we bought our new T-105 6 volt batteries. I knew they had a good reputation, but never expected them to last ten years.

I'm sure there has been some deterioration, but they are still doing fine!

We are now three days in a row without any sunshine and while we have been mindful of our electrical usage, we haven't been really limiting ourselves very much. The only thing we really didn't do was to use our electric toaster which sucks a lot of juice!

So throughout the last three days I still haven't seen the batteries go below 12.2 resting volts... still over 50% charge, and that is the lowest level you want to go. In fact, it has only been a handful of times over the past 10 years that we have dropped them below 12.0 volts, so that is probably why they have lasted so well.

Woke up to a steady rain yesterday morning, and it didn't look like it was going to let up until after lunch so we went for a walk in the rain. I didn't bring the camera because of the rain, but I did have the phone with me and I snapped only one photo...

Walking in the rain.

We walked almost 3 miles (5 kms) in the morning, and another 5.5 miles (9 kms) in the afternoon. This is a great park with a lot of trails, but the problem is they close the trails after periods of heavy rain so we were relegated to the roadways in the park.

Ruth baked some chocolate chip cookies in the morning, and some bread in the afternoon. Having the oven on kept us nice and warm... the high temperature was only about 60F (15C) yesterday. Today is overcast but not raining, and calling for a high of 68F (20C).

  1. In our camper we have a toaster that sits on top of the stove top and uses the Propane. It was made by my grandpa many many years ago and it is a half of a metal coffee can with holes poked in the bottom and wire strung across the top. It works great!

    1. My BIL made us one many years ago. Yep, works great on toast and flour tortillas!

    2. We used to have one of those old style camper toasters that you could use over the propane stove or a fire but we just found that we didn't use it much. Even our electric toaster doesn't get used much because we don't always have gluten free bread with us and that's the only time that I would use it and seeing that I just made some bread it would have been nice to have used it that one day. We will have electric at out next spot though. :-)

  2. Hi Kevin and Ruth! I admire people who know they won't melt if the go out in the rain. We have had several nights in a row with temperatures dropping down to minus 6, and rising to just above freezing during the day, but we are plugged in and keep a ceramic heater running to save on propane. We are just finishing our 14 day quarantine in our RV, sure looking forward to a bicycle ride. Sending warm thoughts your way!

    2. Nope we don't melt, we just get a little wet, however we wouldn't have done that walk if it had been pouring rain. ;-)

We hope the weather warms up more for you, it shouldn't be long that is for sure. Glad that you could get out on your bike after being cooped up in the RV for 14 days.

  3. Hey guys, I've actually been considering buying some Trojan T-105s to replace our current 12 volt RV/marine battery. It's good to know the Trojans have treated you so well!

    1. We love our Trojan T-105 batteries, we would never go back to the 12 volt ones. If you look after the batteries well and are careful with them, they will last a good long time, as we have proven. :-)

  4. Isn't it terrible when the temp dips below 20C we have to put on long pants and hoodies!! We are sooooo spoiled!!!! That is excellent battery life on your Trojans. My interstates are starting to leak around the posts which causes corrosion and plays havoc with the connections. They are 6 years old which is a year more than I figured before having to change them. I think being plugged into shore power with the charger on 24/7 does as much damage as anything. With solar there is no charge going in for half of the day which gives them a break. Just my thoughts.

    1. Yes, I would agree with that Lorne. Especially if you still have the original converter charger that came with the rig. They weren't very good quality.
