The odd surrealist sculpture garden of Edward James

We have known about this place for quite a long time and have never made the effort to visit. It's one of the reasons we came to this area besides the fact that we simply had never been here before and there is a lot of other stuff to see as well.

It was only a 25 km (15 mile) drive from where we had stayed Wednesday night at Club Palma Solas. So we headed out at 9:00am to try and beat any buses to the parking lot I had read about.

In 25 kms, we gained about 1,800' in altitude. Found the bus parking area which was actually an only concrete structure that had never been finished and they parked buses on the roof! In very hilly terrain, this was the most level spot around! They charged us 100 pesos each to park there.

It was only a 20 minute walk or so to the entrance to "Las Pozas", and the sculpture park which are essentially the same place.

Ruth at the entrance.

80 acres of forest are filled with these odd concrete structures.

I was going to type some of this out for you, but you'll just have to zoom in on the photo!

You can go swimming here.

Ruth, Mona, Roger, Aron, Owenita, Jim.

It's an interesting place in the green lush jungle. We were disappointed they didn't supply you with a map of some kind, as well as the fact that some of the trails were closed. Also, some of the concrete structures (built between 1962 and 1984) are starting to deteriorate badly.

But, it's still a neat place to wander around.

We had spent about two hours wandering around, but you can only look at so many odd concrete things and they all start to look the same. Still, given that we are not so much into art, we enjoyed the two hours.

We walked a back route from the sculpture park to the actual town of Xilitla and found somewhere to have some lunch. Including a beer each, the bill for 7 of us for lunch was 510 pesos ($30 CAD, $21 USD).

Hmm.

Nice mural.

Interesting way to do the church bells.

Back to where the motorhomes were parked.

We had the option to stay overnight exactly where we were, but it was right beside the road and just a concrete lot. It was only 2:00pm, so we made the decision to carry on to an RV park near the city of Ciudad Valles.

Yesterday's drive.

The El Banito RV Park has seen better days and there is not much to do close by so we are moving on to some more waterfalls and swimming holes! It's hot... temperature during the day supposed to go to 33C (91F) so some swimming will be welcome!

    1. It was very interesting, especially with all the tropical plants growing up around all the old concrete structures.
