Starting a two week holiday.

Yesterday was our last day with Helen and Tony. Two weeks sure goes by quickly when you're having fun.

We had to leave to take them to LAX airport at 3:00pm, so we decided to just hang around the campground in the morning. Went for a short walk on one of the trails.

The trail we chose was nothing special...just a flat walking path really. But, there were things to see along the way. Lots of birds and lizards. Here are some pics...

Colorful cactus flower.

Acorn woodpecker.

Lizard.

Kevin, having fun.

Tony, Helen, and Ruth. Bird watching.

A red crowned parrot.

Tony took this picture. The parrot is not native to this area. We asked the park ranger about it, and he says they're an endangered species native to Mexico, but there are several of them living in this area. The story goes that a pair escaped from a pet store several years ago and adapted to living in the wild. Only a rumour that he heard, so nobody knows if that is truely the case. Further research on our part shows that they've actually been spotted in southern California since the '60's, but weren't included on the "bird spotters list" until 2001.

Ruth, and some cactus.

Lizard.

A woodpecker, doing what woodpeckers do.

The road leading to the campground at O'Neill Regional Park.

Ruth made a delicious pot roast for lunch so that we could have a big meal before leaving for the airport. We left at exactly 3:00pm, and pulled into the terminal at exactly 5:00pm, a distance of 61 miles (98 kms).

We parked and made sure that they had their boarding passes and said goodbye until the next time. Hopefully we'll see them next January or February in Spain!

Then, Ruth and I had to do the drive back to the campground, and in rush hour traffic. We decided that if we were going to be crawling along, we might as well do it on a route where there's something to look at, rather than the freeway. So we made our way over to the Pacific Coast Highway and went south to the campground from there.

It was 8:30pm when we pulled back in to O'Neill Regional Park. We've had fun here, but we sure won't miss Los Angeles area traffic.

Only two weeks until we go back to work. But, rather than looking at it that way, we're looking at it as if we're just starting a two week vacation!

We're going to quickly make our way to Utah, spend a week there, and then five days to go from Utah back to Cabri Regional Park for the summer.

This morning, we're going to drop off the Beetle rental car (we put 1,100 miles, or 1,760 kms on it) and then head towards Las Vegas. Hoping to make it to the Nevada border, but we'll play it by ear.

    1. We prefer the more hilly hikes but this was still an enjoyable one! :-)

If we don't see them in Spain then hopefully we will see them in England before heading back home.

  3. As the years pass you guys have the campground in good order. I think returning will be a pleasure and it won't take long before it's up and running again. We always look forward to the return trip to see what happened over the winter.

    1. Yes, each year will get better as we head back to the campground. We are curious as to how it will look after this past winter. We have more plans for improvements as well throughout the summer, hopefully we will be able to get some of them done.

  5. That is the same type of parrot that we rescued from Acapulco years ago. Beautiful bird, it has blue in it's wings.

    1. Yes, they say that they come from Mexico and are now endangered there. Looks like they are really thriving here though and there is talk of making them a protected species here.
