I like the way they do things here!

I sure do like the way they do things with vehicle and insurance registration here in Saskatchewan. Compared to Ontario, it's a breath of fresh air!

Today when we go into town, I will get the new licence plate and insurance for Sherman, our motorhome. He has been registered in Ontario, but because he's been sitting since we arrived here last April I just hadn't bothered to switch the registration over yet.

The only downside was the mandatory vehicle inspection. But with that done...everything else is a piece of cake.

The cost of registration and getting plates is based on the vehicle weight. For Sherman, that's going to be $112 a year.

Insurance is going to be inexpensive, since we take a basic package only.

And the best part? You can do both of those things by the month! (Edit: the cost of our one month registration and insurance was .... $39, taxes and fees included!)

And since we don't need the Canadian insurance after we cross the Mexican border (because it's not valid there anyhow), we only need to buy one month's worth. Yes, we also need to purchase a 6 month Mexican policy for the motorhome, but that's fairly cheap too.

Then, when we need to re-instate the policy when we cross back into the U.S. next spring, we simply call them or do it online. Easy peasy.

We're off to town...for the last time this season...enjoy your day!

Thanks again for doing and and all of your Amazon shopping through any of our links here at Travel with Kevin and Ruth! You're helping us out, and you pay the same price that you would anyhow. Simply visit Amazon through any of the links we supply, and then shop as you normally would. Amazon keeps track of everything else, and then we get a check at the end of the month. Cool, huh?!

  1. Sounds a lot easier than BC too - cheaper as well.

  2. At what point would you have to get Sherman 're-inspected'? Or is is valid indefinitely? Here in Manitoba the inspections are valid for one year or as long as you own the vehicle - I'm assuming it would be the same, but since you can suspend your insurance for a length of time, maybe it's different.

    1. The inspection is only necessary to get the registration done. As long as it stays registered in Saskatchewan, it doesn't need to be done again. You can let the insurance/registration lapse as we are going to do, and then you simply reinstate it when you need it.

  3. That is a great way to insure your RV. We do insure our RV for the year but we do get a refund for the time we are in Mexico.

    1. Yes, we've heard that is the procedure necessary for British Columbia.

  4. My RV basically sits in one place from October to April while I boondock in Yuma. Be interesting to see if I can negotiate some kind of discount during that time!

    1. Surprised you hadn't checked into that possibility before!

  5. There is mandatory inspection in Texas also.

We didn't know that Canada goes by the weight of the vehicle. Very interesting.

    1. Different for each province...so it is not necessarily the same in the whole country...
