Lighthouse Road

Usually, where there is a lighthouse, there is a parking spot for an RV. Sure enough, at the end of Lighthouse Rd., there was a nice overnight spot for Sherman. Only one problem.

There was a foghorn attached to the lighthouse. It said "Caution: This foghorn will sound without warning, and could cause hearing damage." Well sure enough, it became foggy in the middle of the night last night. This foghorn went off like an alarm clock every two minutes or so for about an hour. Other than that, we slept great!

Sherman, parked at the top right, at the end of Lighthouse Road

Oh, and you can't call them a lighthouse here in politically correct Canada. Now, the official government sign calls it a "Lightstation", we guess because there's no longer a house involved.

Ruth and Whiskey at Fort Anne

We had a pretty good day yesterday despite the dismal weather. My father once said that the only thing you can change about the weather is your attitude towards it! So we drove into the town of Annapolis Royal and visited old Fort Anne. There's not really much there to see, but it was nice wandering around the grounds in the drizzling rain.

Then we drove on to the town of Digby, which is world famous for it's scallops fishery. If this is where they come from, why are they still so expensive here? No, we didn't buy any. Digby is a nice little town to wander around though.

Digby fishing boats

Yes, that's really this guy's name. I wonder if he's a shitty lawyer. Too funny.

Then we headed out Lighthouse  Road to see if there was a good spot for Sherman to overnight, and of course there was. (GPS 44.69079 -65.78525). Easily enough room for any size RV. It is yet to be seen if it will be this easy to find boondocking spots in the middle of July or August, however when we were in Prince Edward Island in the summer of 2008 we were surprised at how few RV's we saw out exploring. The vast majority of them are parked up side by side in RV parks, and so we would have had no problem finding free overnight spots on the island in the middle of summer. We expect that Nova Scotia will be the same.

Sherman overlooking the Bay of Fundy

Sherman at the end of Lighthouse Road. The "lightstation" is actually off to the left so you can't see it in any of the pictures.

Only did 70 kms (43 miles) today.

  1. Ah yes. The Bay of Fundy and Fog. Go together like Bread and Butter. If we're in the valley and thinking of visiting one of my cousins in Margaretville, we'll usually call ahead to see if it's foggy or not. Could be a nice, bright sunny day in the Annapolis Valley, but not over on the shore.
The one and only trip we made over on the Digby Ferry from St. John it was foggy. Some day I might make that trip and actually be able to see 50 feet ahead of the boat.
    Happy Easter.
    Bundle up.

  3. What a beautiful place you are exploring. I can't wait for it to turn green this summer. I would be tempted to hang out more than one night at those great boondocking sites you find.

I'll bottle you up some sunshine and blue skies and send it on over.

  4. Even though it is not sunny you can still tell how beautiful Nova Scotia is. I love all the boondocking sites you find. We need to get set up in a position to do that. John wants solar so it may be a little while.

  7. I love the chance to see a completely different part of the world through your eyes. Mo and I are cruising your way next fall, but certainly will not get to see it up close and personal the way that you share it.

  8. I thought you'd go and have a look at Port Royal, established in 1605 by Champlain. It is a very interesting place to visit. Google it and have a look. It'll bring back your elementary school history lessons. It is located about 5 miles west of Annapolis Royal and is an older historic location than Fort Anne that you visited in Annaplolis Royal..We first visited it in 1968, I just had to see it as I had been fasinated with the story since I was in school myself and taught it to my students while teaching in Manitoba. You must remember "The Order Of Good Cheer" which Champlain started there to try and help his men through the winter doldrums.

  9. Bob...I know what you mean about the fog. A few years ago when we were at Lindsey's it was a beautiful sunny day, we popped over to Hall's Harbour for some exploring and lobster, only a half hour away but over the small mountain and we were in complete fog. Funny how that happens.

    WBY...You're welcome.

Grace...We can't wait to see things green up too. If the weather was better we might stay in some of these places more than a night. BTW we got the sunshine you sent this morning, thank you. It's still real cold but we have beautiful blue skies. Not sure how long it will last.

Janie and John...Nova Scotia really is a beautiful place. They say that wherever you are in Nova Scotia you are only a half hour drive to the ocean. Solar may be expensive but we think it is worth it, to be able to stay at places like these. It will pay for itself in a short time.

    Contessa...Yup, only in Canada!

Handmade Crafts Done While RVing Blog...Thank you for following along, hope you will enjoy our travels. We will definitely check out your blogs.

Chuck and Anneke...When Kevin came back and mentioned seeing the notice about the foghorn, I figured that the fog would start rolling in, and sure enough it did, just our luck!

Malone...It is nice to take our time and see some of these places. We like things that aren't so touristy. If you are comeing this way in the fall at least you can maybe see some of the better places. I am sure you will enjoy it here.

Elaine...Both Fort Anne and Port Royal are closed at the moment. Fort Anne is only a small museum with a park like setting so you are able to wander around the grounds yourself, the only thing we couldn't see was the museum and all the interpretive signs have been removed for the winter. Maybe we will stop by Port Royal when we head to Yarmouth on another trip, after all we are here for the summer.

  10. Gotta love the "light stations" and the sights, I agree about the weather, everyday is a bright, warm day, just some are brighter and warmer than others!

  11. Beautiful spot to camp in. Sorry about the fog horn, but to me that would just be another adventure. Stay safe.

  12. George and Suzie...We are smiling today, the sun is shining nice and bright. Still cold, but I'll take that over cold and rain.

pidge...You're right it is part of the adventure. It didn't bother me as much as it did Kevin.
