Obviously airfare was the number one expense for us, plus we ended up taking two other flights in country that we hadn't originally budgeted for.
The entire trip cost $2,211 CAD ($1,622 USD).
Here's how it all broke down...
Travel: The bus back and forth to Mexico City totaled $100 CAD ($73 USD). Then a total of $1,159 CAD ($849 USD) for the two of us for airfare. That was Mexico City to Panama City, Panama City to Manta, Cuenca to Quito, Quito to Manta, Manta to Panama City, and Panama City to Mexico City. Six different airplanes! And then the bus from Manta to Guayaquil, and shared taxi from Guayaquil to Cuenca was $75 CAD ($55 USD).
Accommodation: A total of $213 CAD ($156 USD) for 6 paid nights. Our nice hotel in Guayaquil was a benefit through our credit card where we get a $250 annual credit. We stayed 8 nights with our friends in Cuenca, and one night in the airport.
Meals out: Because we stayed for free with friends in Cuenca, we paid for most of their meals when we were out. So this category is a little bit inflated due to that, but still, it's pretty cheap to eat out in Ecuador. We spent a total of $462 CAD ($338 USD).
Groceries: We spent $77 CAD ($56 USD) on groceries.
Entertainment: We spent $4 CAD ($3 USD) to climb the church tower in Cuenca! I guess we are easily entertained.
Miscellaneous: A total of $96, consisting of taxis, a haircut, foreign exchange fees, and local transportation.
Alcohol: Just a little wine and beer on the weekends. Total of $46 CAD ($34 USD).
So, a total of $2,211 CAD ($1,622 USD). Considering we spent time in four of Ecuador's major cities, we think that's not bad! And figure that some of the food and restaurant meals we would have spent anyhow, even if we hadn't left.
Next up... what did we think of Ecuador?
