Shopping for a new car

In the last post, I had mentioned that I thought my sisters car was going to be a write off, and that turned out to be true.

So now it was time for her to go shopping. The only question was... how much would the insurance give her for her old car?

I looked up the approximate values, and hers had really low mileage and was in overall great condition. I thought she should get at least $14,000 CAD, and she ended up with about $16,000 CAD, so she did really well.

Enke isn't usually a lap cat, but this time he was being pretty friendly!

She decided she wanted to test drive a Nissan Versa. They are just a standard small 4 door sedan. So I did some searching for a deal and found two possibilities. One was a used one... a 2021 with 68,000 kms for about $16,000 CAD and the other was a brand new never sold 2024 with under 100 kms for about $22,000 CAD.

So Friday morning we drove out to see the used one that was located at a Volkswagon dealer. I hate dealing with used car salesmen. In this case it was a saleswoman. She was actually nice enough, but a very typical salesperson. We had a quick look at the car and I made some mental notes of some things I didn't like, and my sister Elaine went off for a test drive.

She really liked the car, so it was time for some negotiating. But I had a figure in my head of what would be the maximum I would pay, and I don't like the whole negotiation process. So I turned their game back on them and asked the girl for their very best price... and we would take it or walk away. I love making them do the work! She kept on asking us to make an offer, but I refused. We almost walked away right then and there. 

Anyhow, eventually she went and spoke to her manager and came back with their "best" price. It was about $600 more than the $14,500 or so we would have been willing to pay, so we walked away. 

And the reason was that we still wanted to look at the new 2024. After all, she could have a brand new car for only about $7,000 more money. Long story short, she ended up with the brand new 2024 Nissan Versa for $21,100 CAD... a great deal! Glad I was able to help her out getting a deal, and to be honest I kind of enjoyed the whole process.

One day last week, Ruth got together with a couple of friends from her childhood.

Before you ask, yes, Myrna has no arms.  Due to a farming accident when she was 4 years old. She's adapted incredibly well and it's amazing that she can do the number of things that most other people take for granted. 

We're meeting up with some other friends this week including some of the girls Ruth used to work with when she was a hairstylist many years ago. And of course my guys weekend away is coming up! Always great to get together with old friends.
