Sometimes things just have a way of working out

When we arrived in Shkoder on Saturday, our original intention was to stay for a full week. We had been traveling almost every day for the whole month of October, and we just needed some down time. Shkoder has a lot of places we could ride our bikes to, and it's just a good place to relax.

The camping place we wanted to stay at was a reasonable €10 a night and we were prepared to pay that for a week. But when we arrived, it was full of mud from the recent rains.

So we ended up at a much more expensive place where we payed €17 a night for a three night stay.

I have three different apps that I use to find places to stay. And of course we also use our eyes when we are driving, or out and about. We have learned many times that not every good overnight spot is listed on any or all of these apps.

Anyhow, one of the apps is geared to the more popular European countries. So I hadn't even been looking at it for Albania. But I just randomly checked it yesterday, and there was a listing for a motorhome spot at a hotel resort on the other side of the river, only a short distance from where we are currently. There was even a photo of a motorhome in a gravel lot overlooking the river.

So yesterday, Ruth and I walked over there to check things out.

View from the bridge crossing the river.

We got over there and it's just an empty gravel parking lot beside the restaurant. But there is access to bathrooms. No services, but we don't need anything. We walked through the resort grounds. It's likely a really busy spot during the summer season, but now it's pretty quiet. The restaurant looks fairly high end though, and there were quite a few people in it. The restaurant clients use a different, paved, parking lot.

We went up to the reception and the girl spoke some English. We explained what we needed, and I showed her the photo and the listing. She didn't know anything about it, but took my phone with the photo and went off to speak with her manager.

She came back saying "Of course you can stay". Ruth asked how much it would cost, and she said "Oh, there is no cost. It is free".

Nice. So we have made arrangements to be over there by 11:00am. We'll play it by ear, but if all goes well we will probably stay there for another four nights.

So, we had been willing to pay €70 for the week, now we are only paying €51 for the same week! Sometimes things just have a way of working out.

Today, we are meeting with the guys from the Albania Car Rental place who looked after us so well when we were here. Remember, they are the ones who invited us to their Sunday family dinner when we were here in May. We wanted to take them out for lunch, so we are doing that this afternoon.

  2. I hate committing to more than one night anywhere because you often find something better and cheaper around the corner. It is nice to read that everyone tries their best to communicate one way or the other rather than just saying no!

    1. Unless we have been to a place before, we hate committing to more than a couple of days as well. We are really happy to have found this other spot because we really weren't ready to leave Shkodër yet!

We find that having a language barrier hasn't stopped us from meeting wonderful people. Where there is a will there is a way and we always seem to find a way to get our point across and sometimes even have a great conversation. :-)
