Heading into Bosnia & Herzegovina

We would like to explore more of Croatia, but we have a choice of which route we are going to take, and we have decided to go through Bosnia & Herzegovina instead. It's all new to us anyhow, so we would be missing something no matter which way we go.

But we think Bosnia is a little more our style. It's certainly more "off the beaten path" than Croatia is. As an example, for every fifteen tourists who go to Croatia, only one goes to Bosnia.

And other than coastline, Bosnia has just as much to offer. In fact, we are planning our first stop at Bosnia's Una National Park.

It also doesn't hurt that from what I've read, Bosnia is about 40% cheaper than Croatia on an overall basis.

We don't plan to spend a lot of time in Bosnia... simply driving though. But, it will probably take us between one to two weeks to do the 475 km (300 mile) drive to the southern border with Montenegro.

We were thinking about how October is almost over, but we haven't found that it has rushed by. Considering we only returned to pick up Max in Germany on October 1st, we have done a lot of stuff in the past 25 days. Here is the approximate route we have travelled so far...

Over the next month we will travel through Bosnia, Montenegro and into Albania. We will be eligible to re-enter the Schengen visa zone at Greece in early December.

Yesterday was a relax day! We keep pretty busy, but every now and then it's good to have some down time. It was nice and sunny, but a bit chilly with a high of only 9C (48F). A good day to give Max a bit of a clean up!

Max was due for a bit of a bath!

It turns out there are two friendly pups where we are parked up.
They have both been recently "fixed", and one still has to wear the cone of shame!

Sunrise this morning.

Travel day and border crossing day today. Those days are never boring! Full report tomorrow!

  1. The amount of time you are spending in the B and H you should make a day trip to coast of Croatia. Why not stay in Mostar and drive over to Dubrovnik. If you don't want to drive there are many buses between the towns. You missed Venice years ago don't miss Dubrovnik. It will not be as busy in November. You can day trip it.

    1. We are not headed to Mostar on this trip, it would be a detour for us to head that way. Just because we missed Venice in Italy back on our visit to Italy in 2017 doesn't mean that we won't visit Venice, we just didn't want to make the trip up there on that particular visit and the same goes for Dubrovnik. We know that it is a beautiful place but the fact that this is where everyone wants to go really does put us off. We really do prefer to find places that aren't on the tourist radar, that a pretty little hidden gems. We will see, we may or may not come back to visit Dubrovnik but we honestly aren't too worried if we don't see it. There are just so many beautiful places in the world and there is no way to see them all. :-)

  2. We were travelling in Croatia a few years ago and it was so packed with tourists that we just got on a bus and went to Bosnia. We loved Bosnia and hope it’s still as unspoiled as it was then! I’m looking forward to hearing about Montenegro as we haven’t yet had a chance to go there.

    1. So far it still seems unspoiled, at least what we have seen of Bosnia so far. I think that is why we are already pulled towards liking it here. We are looking forward to exploring the country, even if we won't be here as long as we would like. We need to get through Bosnia and Montenegro by the middle of November when the mandatory law for winter tires comes into effect.
