Time to move on, and the plan for the next few days

Well, it's moving day today! And we definitely feel like it's time to move on. We've been in this apartment in Antalya for exactly one month! It was almost starting to feel like our apartment.

Yesterday was our final eye doctor appointment, and everything is the way it should be so we are cleared to travel. Of course we still have eye drops to take for the next month or so.

We dropped the masks for a quick photo with the team...

So today, we drive around 200 kms (124 miles) but we hope to stop and do a hike along the way so we probably won't arrive in Fethiye until late afternoon. If you remember, Fethiye was the city we stayed at when we first arrived in Turkey
.
And, we are staying in exactly the same apartment!

Monday is a free day for us, but unfortunately they are calling for afternoon rain. It's also going to be cool, with a high of only 9C (48F) and a low of 2C (35F). Yikes. That's abnormally cold, and of course it won't last... but we are off to Tanzania on Tuesday anyhow.

We have our rental car right up until the end. Very convenient of the rental guy to let us keep it and drive it right to the airport and he will collect it from there.

Our Turkish Airways flight leaves Dalaman (DLM) airport at 10:25am Tuesday and they want us at the airport three hours ahead of time, which is a bit extreme for a domestic flight, but whatever. We find that time passes quickly in airports.

It's only an hour flight to Instanbul (SAW) and then we have a few hours to hang around there for our Qatar Airways 5:55pm flight to arrive in Doha, Qatar around 10:00pm. Then about four hours later we fly from Doha (DOH) to Kilimanjaro (JRO) where we arrive Wednesday morning at 9:40am.

Our Tuesday flight route.

Fortunately, Arusha is in the same time zone as we are now, so despite all of that travel there is no time change to deal with other than the hour we lose and then gain at Doha.

Our safari and trekking contact will be picking us up at the airport and driving us to the city of Arusha.

Temperature in Arusha will be 32C (90F) or so. Shorts and t-shirt weather!

    1. We will have a few hours to waste at the three different airports that we will be in but as Kevin said, we don't have a problem filling our time up while we wait.

  2. Our dd had a friend in high school who was an exchange student from Tanzania. She was one of the sweetest, most respectful teenagers I have ever met. If she is any indication of the country, it'll be a great time.

  3. Well, I for one am sure going to miss Turkey - I've been to Istanbul and a few stops on the Turquoise Coast in the past but I think I've fallen in love with the country from afar just by reading your dispatches! I'm looking forward to Tanzania, too, but it's bittersweet we won't be getting any more of those coastal ruins with spectacular views!
You guys are so lucky & so *smart* to have figured out how to live your lives this way while you can still enjoy it fully & this is just the best travel blog to read for vicarious enjoyment as well as for gathering bucket list ideas. Best of luck making your way to Kili!

    1. We are going to miss Turkey too but it is also time to move on. We will definitely be back here again and the next time we will see a whole different part of the country. We have both said to each other that this is definitely a country that we could easily live in, it checks pretty much all the boxes for us.

We don't consider ourselves "lucky" to be living this life, we made the decision to just do it and figured out a way to make it work. I think the biggest obstacle that most people have, is having the courage to take that first step because it is really a leap of faith when you don't have money backing you and we have certainly proven to people that traveling doesn't have to be expensive.

We are really glad that you enjoy our blog so much, we hope that you will love our next adventure in Tanzania as much as you have here in Turkey. :-)

  4. Doha airport is quite beautiful and grand with huge sculptures and art scattered around. Very pleasant place to spend a few hours in transit. I've been there a lot over the years on my way to see my daughter in Dubai flying on Qatar. Good airline. Bon voyage!!

    1. We only hope that we will have the freedom to move around in the airport once we arrive in Doha and wait for our connecting flight. Hopefully we will be able to see these huge sculptures. :-)
