It wasn't in the plan to visit any ruins... so it was a nice bonus!

In the morning, we went downtown to pick up our new glasses. Yes, we can do 90% of what we want to do without glasses. But we knew going into this eye surgery that the final results were not going to be perfect.

For me (Kevin), my left eye is pretty much perfect. But while my right eye has perfect near vision (it's actually amazing!), the distance vision is not yet. And it never will be, except that my brain hasn't quite caught on to that. And until it does, I am better to wear glasses for driving.

So I had a cheap pair made with transition lenses so that I can use them mostly as sunglasses. Total cost was 750 lira ($129 CAD, $102 USD).

Ruth's intermediate vision is perfect, but her distance vision is slightly off, and her near vision is as well. Again, she can function quite well without glasses at all, including using the computer and even reading a book. But for anything up close, she needed a cheap pair of drugstore style reading glasses, and she used her old frames to get transition lenses made for the distance vision. Again, they will be more for sunglasses than anything else. For Ruth, the two pairs of glasses cost 800 lira ($137 CAD, $109 USD).

They weren't quite ready when we got there, so we went for a walk for an hour.

Antalya has many pretty parks near the waterfront.

We went back to the apartment and had some lunch, and then took a drive up into the mountains to try to find the official starting point of the Lycian Way hiking trail.

As explained in previous posts, the Lycian way is a 500 km (300 mile) hiking trail that runs from Fethiye to Antalya. We had been to the starting point in Fethiye a month and a half ago, so we figured we would look for the starting point at this end of the trail.

Found it!

I had actually planned on arriving at a spot where the trail intersected a road, not realizing until we got there that this was the actual starting point. There are quite a few campsites around this end as well and the area is well used by the backpacker and rock climbing crowd.

It's easy to see why this area is popular with the rock climbers.

Very cool.

Can you see Ruth in the bottom left corner?

No, we did not climb up there. No point in risking a broken leg a couple of weeks before Kilimanjaro!

On the Lycian Way trail.

Some good uphill sections.

Gotta keep in shape for Kilimanjaro!

Burial tombs.

It wasn't in the plan to visit any ruins... so it was a nice bonus! We were heading for a spot marked on the map as a viewpoint, not knowing that the ancient ruins of Trebanna were located at the same spot. I guess the Lycians enjoyed a place with a view as well!

At the ruins of Trebanna.

It's all Greek to me.

How is this still standing?

Ruth in her Hobbit house!

Yes, there was definitely some views!

Exploring.

It was a perfect day for a hike. Mostly blue skies and sunshine, with a temperature of about 15C (60F) and no wind to speak of.

Beautiful scenery.

Stairs to nowhere.

Back home by 4:30pm. What a great day we had. Ended up doing about 13 kms (8 miles) in total.

Today is our last day of exploring this area. Saturday is another lockdown day, but we have our final eye doctor appointment in the morning. And Sunday we drive to Fethiye.

So today, we are doing a daytrip south for a hike to the Fires at Mount Chimaera.

  2. Do you show anything on your clothing, your backpack or your RV to show that you are Canadian?.
I found that it sometimes made a great difference in attitude when I was found to be Canadian.

    1. I did have a Canadian flag pin on my backpack until we gave it away to a family that we met along the way, other than that no we don't and we honestly have found that everyone we have met along the way has always been friendly and helpful.

  6. Glad you're happy with your eyes. I would not like having to still wear glasses, even only part of the time, after going through surgery. I am sticking with my progressives, as they work fine for me, and I am able to read fine without them (actually better than with them!) But I guess with your high-tech lens replacements, you'll never have to deal with cataracts, and I probably will, so it's definitely a trade-off. The important thing is that you're both happy -- and you didn't pay Canadian or US prices for the surgery!

    1. We are very happy with our eyes and we really don't "have" to wear the glasses but that we should have them only for certain times when they are really necessary, like if Kevin is driving at night or driving for long periods of time and his eyes start to get tired and for me it is more just for really up close and fine print. The doctor actually told us to not make a habit of wearing them, and to only use them when necessary.

I am already loving the fact when we are out hiking, I don't have glasses that keep sliding done my nose that have to continuously be pushed back up.

No, we will never have to deal with cataracts and Kevin's vision should never change. I may have issues with vision on my one eye because of the hole in the retina so that has to be monitored on a regular basis but other than that I shouldn't have any changes either.
