Canyon Roadhouse

We stayed two nights at the Gondwana Canyon Roadhouse . It's a fun place, decorated like an old "Route 66" style garage. Where they come up with this number of artifacts, I have no idea. It's almost like an old museum.

And it's located only 14 kms from the Fish River Canyon.

It's definitely an interesting place...

Welcome to Canyon Roadhouse!

Our room. We had a larger corner unit. There are 24 rooms.

The restaurant is full of old cars and artifacts.

The restaurant garage!

Now, this is a little different...

This is in the women's washroom. Hmm, what's in the box, you might ask?

So you have to read the story that goes along with the picture...

But you ladies wouldn't try to open the box, would you??!

There's a similar version in the men's washroom...

Don't open the box!

Where do they come up with an old Cadillac?

Canyon Roadhouse also operates a campground on the property and they've got really nice wahsroom/shower facilities for the campers.

The one thing they do differently here as opposed to the other Gondwana lodges is that they do dinner "a la carte" so it's not the buffet style that they do at the other ones. We enjoyed our meals there and they came out a little cheaper for us as a result of being able to order off the menu.

We can't think of anything to complain about at Canyon Roadhouse. The staff were great, especially our waitress Claudia!

  2. Definitely a "motor heads" place to stay. Sort of like an elephant graveyard for old cars. :c)

    1. Yep it sure is! It's amazing how they came up with all the "stuff".

    1. Maybe I did and maybe I didn't! It could be big trouble if you do though! :-)

Thanks Monica and Kent, and yes we are having the time of our lives.

  4. Even though the lodges and hotels you have been staying out look mostly empty, they also look very clean and accommodating. And have a lot of personality...

    1. They were quieter earlier in the month but now that it is the Christmas season they have been much busier. Our summer time is their busy time when they are quite often sold out. The lodges are spotless and the staff is super friendly and yes, they are very accommodating. Each lodge has it's own theme and so far we have loved them all.

  6. You definitely have gotten to stay in some great places. The rooms and restaurants always look wonderful. David would love this one. He LOVES old cars. Where did they get all those old cars??

    1. Every one of the lodges has been so different but each one is so clean and friendly. Mannfred Goldbeck, the Managing Director of Gondwana has found many of the items. It apparently is a hobby of his and he loves it, for the amount of items there I am sure he had some help.

  7. That box reminds me of a bar just north of Detroit that has an Indian in the women's restroom. If the loincloth is lifted, a loud alarm goes off in the middle of the bar.

I think you opened the box and something like that happened.

    1. Well, I guess one or other of the bars/restaurants stole the idea from the other. Luckily when the alarm went off it was early in the day and it didn't cost us anything because not only does an alarm go off in the middle of the bar but you also have to by a round for everyone there! :)
