What a day!

Far too much to tell you in one single blog post, so I'll do another one this afternoon. But suffice to say that the entire caravan group had a really fun day. Us included! Actually, we have to say....we're enjoying our time with this group, and it really doesn't feel like work.

Okay. So, yesterday was actually a "day off", but there is so much to see and do in the area that we made a series of choices for people...and they could either participate, or not at their own expense.

First, Arturo (the owner of the San Juan del Lago RV Park) volunteered to take those who wanted to go down to the local hot springs for a soak in the tubs. Apparently it's a pretty rustic experience, but you get a private room, equipped with a typical bathtub....and simply have a hot bath. Three people took part, and they all enjoyed it.

While that was going on, Ruth and I needed some exercise, so went off on our own and followed a trail that went up the hill on the opposite side of the highway. Just us, and the cows!

The main east to west highway between Guadalajara and Mexico City.

The main highway is right beside the RV Park, but it's not noisy at all. In fact, I asked around and nobody has been bothered by highway noise at all. The road surface is actually set lower down so there is a natural sound barrier.

As we were hiking up the hill, we came across a cattle drive.

We were walking faster than the cattle, so we wanted to pass them. We managed to get past the main group of them, but up in the front was a new mom with her 6 day old baby calf. She was not impressed that we were getting so close to her calf, and one of the cowboys had to come up and kind of herd her off to the side while we walked past.

This mom, with her six day old calf was not impressed with us!

Getting a great view of the area! You can see the RV Park on the other side of those two walking bridges.

Zoomed in. Hi Sherman! You can see how the highway is set lower than ground level.

This hummingbird sat still for a little while.

Around 11:30am, we had arranged for a minibus to take those who wanted to go into the nearby town of Cuitzeo. And at the same time, Arturo had volunteered to take some people with him to a shoe factory where he had ordered a couple of pairs of boots. I would have liked to have gone to the show factory, I think it would have been an interesting experience. I like seeing how things are made. But Ruth and I went into town with five others.

One of the oldest colonial churches in Mexico is located in Cuitzeo. The first stone was laid in 1550, and that date also commemorates the founding of Cuitzeo.

The full name of the church is Convento de Santa María Magdalena Cuitzeo

Stained glass at the entrance.

One of the old murals. Many have been lost due to cracks and moisture.

We went for a walk around town. Cuitzeo has a population of about 28,000, and they don't get many gringo tourists. Found a lot of people staring at us, but everybody friendly and with a smile. One of our group, John, wanted to get a haircut so I told him I would keep my eyes open for a peluqueria (barber shop).

That story will have to wait until this afternoon!

Today is a travel day, but we're not going far. Under 100 kms (62 miles) to nearby Patzcuaro. We'll arrive before lunch so we've got the afternoon to relax and get caught up on a few things. I'll post another update later. Enjoy your Saturday!

    1. Some of these old churches are amazing.

Only Kevin and I encountered the cattle drive as it was on our hike but as a caravan on the road we have also had experiences like that, yesterday it was goats.
