Perfect weather!

For working or sleeping.

But not so perfect for the campground itself. It's been unseasonably chilly the last week or two, and even though it's still been busy enough on the weekends for campers, the day use area fees are way down. Nobody wants to go to the beach when the daytime high is only 17C (63F)!

And that's what the high was yesterday. It's been going down to around 9C (48F) at night. Chilly for this time of year!

But, as I said, that is really nice weather for working. Less people has actually made our job a little easier, whereas the people who work at the gate and the gal who works the restaurant and store are not happy because much of their income depends on the revenue from the people who use the day use area and there haven't been many of them at what is supposed to be the busiest time of year.

Our Craftsman lawn tractor.

One of my projects has been working on our little lawn tractor. This thing cuts the grass really nicely, but the deck never raised up and down properly and the belts were badly worn. So I spent almost $200 of the campgrounds money and bought the right parts to fix it up properly. I had ordered and picked up two hanging brackets but when I went to install them I found that they had sent me two right hand brackets instead of a left and a right. So I've called the supplier and got them to order the proper one. That should be all I need to put it back together.

Only two more days until our August long weekend starts. I'm being told the campground is sold out again, but I guess we'll see. The weather forecast is not great...highs of only around 21C, but no rain...yet!

Oh, and thanks for all your comments yesterday about Minneapolis. We'll definitely pass this time around given that you all know we like hiking and visiting some parks along the south shore. Plus, Duluth does seem like a worthwhile visit in itself, so we'll go that route. Thanks for your feedback!

  1. What don't you do? Even overhauling the equipment, the campground will surely miss having a handy, hardworking man like you when you leave.

You and Ruth have probably increased the market value of the campground 100%! ;c)

    1. He doesn't do bathrooms, Paul and Marti! If something is mechanical he will do his best to fix it, the internet is a wealth of information. We have only had two pieces of equipment that have had to go for repair and one of them was only because it was under warranty.

    1. I think it is more the day use people that the weather is keeping away, and yes we always have something to do.

  3. I am so excited that you are guys are in first place in the contest. I like the fact that it hasn't been so hot and smokey this summer (even though it's warmer here than you guys are) but I'm sure that cooler weather is not enticing for the beachwear.

    1. Unfortunately we are in forth place in the contest and we need to be in the top three in order to win the 25 nights of accommodation but we still have a month left so we haven't given up yet.

Sounds like you are having better weather, so that is good for you. We are quite happy with this weather since we are working.

  4. I second the opinion of Paul and Marti - they must be thrilled to have found you two. Maybe with the cooler weather, you might be able to, Heaven forbid, read a chapter in a book! It's been fun following your camp management experiences this Summer. Guess you're living proof that there're all kinds of people - some easy, some difficult, some helpful, some not. I can't imagine you won't have a repeat job offer for next year - if you want it.
You've been in one place an awfully long time - for you!

    1. I think I have opened my book once since we arrived in May. Between work and looking after meals I manage to get a little bit of internet time and that's about it for me. Kevin is on the internet a little more but usually he is researching for our upcoming trip to Africa.

This is certainly a job where you meet all kinds and for the most part everyone has been great.

Yes, this has been a long time in one spot for us but we have done it before and we can do it again. It is definitely worth the effort knowing that we will have 7 months off this fall and winter.

  5. I just spent a week camping in those temps (and tornado warnings!) and it was great! Low 20's with sun is still warm enough for the beach in my opinion - the kids didn't mind it anyhow! Our little pop-up has a propane furnace that well well used at night though.

    1. Yep, the nights are pretty cool, especially for this time of year but as you said the day time temperatures are pretty good. The weather doesn't seem to fizz the kids, they are just happy to be camping! Since it got a bit cooler we have noticed that the mosquitoes aren't as bad and we like that.

  6. Most of July here in Oregon was unseasonably hot. Now the last couple of days it feels like fall with a definite nip in the air. I might have to get outside and pull some weeds if it stays cool like this!!!

    1. The summer seems to go way too fast! We have noticed that the wheat is already starting to turn gold, it won't be long and they will be harvesting it and it only seems like it was the other day that they were planting it. Hope you continue to get some nice weather even if it is a bit chilly.
