Not a bad place

I mentioned yesterday that the place we're staying is like a bachelor apartment. And it is, but it's not in an apartment building. I think it was originally built as a granny suite for a family who owned the house.

Now, the house is corporate owned, which had I known that at the time I may not have rented it.

We rented this through Airbnb which has become a bit controversial. That's a whole other story, but the basics are that Airbnb started out as a platform where private individuals could rent out a room in their home, and now it's become very commercial, along with the fees and profits rising prices that go along with it.

The main part of the house is also rented through the platform. We have the granny suite, with our own separate entrance. It's very tiny, but we really don't need anything more.

It's small, but it's nicely done.

It has quality modern appliances with a full size stacking Samsung washer and drier.

We like that it's a ground floor with lots of windows.

In fact, when I was looking for a place to stay, I noticed that there are a lot of places that are basement apartments. It's very common in Canada for house to have a full sized basement, and many have spent the extra to have a "finished" basement. Because housing has become so expensive here, many have also turned that finished basement into another living space, and rented it out. But natural lighting is very limited that way, and we don't like it. This place has lots of natural light.

The downside is that it's too small to have guests over! There is no television, which is a bit odd. But we are used to watching shows on our laptop, so not a big deal. And there is no couch... just a couple of folding chairs, and the stools at the kitchen island.

It has a big bathroom!

We are paying $1,850 CAD ($1,340 USD) for a full month. Which is actually reasonable compared to the place we had here two years ago. At the time, we had rented a small bedroom in a shared house, where we had to share the bathroom and kitchen and living room. While it turned out okay, we won't do it again. Even for that, we had paid $1,500 CAD for a month.

The location is a bit far from my mother's place, so it means more driving. But it's actually really convenient for the gym we're going to. The 3 km walk is quite nice, going through some park space and allotment gardens, and some middle class residential neighbourhoods. And there are several routes we can take to make it more interesting.

For a month, it'll do fine.

  1. It looks like you got a great deal! We don´t use cable tv so when there's not a screen the laptop works just fine for us as well. Enjoy!
