It's gonna get chilly...

Interesting weather forecast as a cold front is moving into a big part of the eastern U.S.... and we're going to try to avoid the worst of it! I see that Lexington, KY will have a high around 66F (19C) today, but by Wednesday it will only be 46F (8C) and by Friday 34F (1C). Yep, that's the high.

Yikes. So we did some driving yesterday, and we'll do some more today. Gotta head further south!

Before we left Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, we had one more hike we wanted to do. So we left the campground around 9:30am, and went and parked in the day use area by the river.

Sherman, parked in the day use area.

We walked across the bridge to the trailhead at Eagle Falls Trail. Good thing we didn't try to park there... only room for about five cars. There was already one car there, but by the time we came out the parking area was full.

Good view of the Cumberland River.

Ruth, under the rock ledge.
She was looking at the following view...

Looking back at Cumberland Falls.

A fairly short trail took us to Eagle Falls. Lots of steps though... we got a good morning workout! Then, we took a loop trail back to the trailhead. Total was about 3 miles (5 kms) but a fairly strenuous hike. Lots of up and down to get the blood flowing.

Beautiful spot at Eagle Falls.

And we were the only ones there at the time. So we sat and admired the waterfall and took some photos.

Ha... it took me 10 seconds to get down from where I had the camera set. Just made it!

See me up on that big rock?

Another small fall along the way.

Then we had to do some driving. I decided to take the four lane highway that heads west to Bowling Green, Ky. It's not named as an Interstate, but it might as well be. However, at least there was hardly any traffic on it, so we just put the cruise on at 55 mph, despite the 70 mph limit.

Hardly anybody on the road!

Scenery along the way.

The Corvette Factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

I wanted to visit the National Corvette Museum, which is right across the road from the factory. They have a huge parking lot, with a special section for RVs, but unfortunately you are not allowed to overnight there.

The museum closes at 5:00pm, and because of the time change we went though yesterday, it gets dark around that time. And we still needed to find somewhere to overnight. But because the museum opens at 8:00am, I wanted to find somewhere close so that we could go into the museum first thing.

As we left the museum parking lot, Ruth noticed a building on it's own pretty much next door. There were a few cars in the parking lot, and a couple of people milling about. I pulled in there to see what it was.

Some kind of lodge building.

I went inside and tried to find someone in charge. Turns out this is the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. Found a guy who was on the board, and he said we would be fine if we parked out of the lights and were gone by 8:00am.

Fantastic. You'd think we should be safe at the Police Lodge!

And we were. Slept fine last night. Today, we're off to the Corvette Museum as soon as we're done breakfast, and then we're going around Nashville and hope to make it onto the Natchez Trace Parkway. Supposed to be a beautiful high of 70F (21C) today, but rain overnight and then cold. So we are heading south, to some warmer weather!

Yesterday's drive 140 miles (224 kms).

Our approximate route over the last two and a half weeks.

  2. All that blue sky in the photo's above has reminded me that I wanted to ask about your new solar controller. Have you had a chance to give it a fair assessment?

    1. Hi Rick. Yes, the new charge controller is working perfectly. The only thing I haven't been able to properly assess is the equalizing function. I had got them up to about 15.6 volts one day when I tried, but they are supposed to equalize up to 16.2 volts and the sun wasn't strong enough that day. I will try again when we are in Texas. Otherwise, considering it was only a $29 controller, it does exactly what the more expensive PWM units do.

    2. Thanks for the report Kevin. This charge controller looks like just what I need for my small rig. We are having a late start from Gabriola BC this year, but we should be away next week ending up at Hutabampito, Sonora after the New Year. We will tuck in there for and extended stay.

    3. Yep, we think that controller should be just fine for your needs. Hope you have good traveling weather. Have fun in Hutabampito! :-)

  3. Nice photos of beautiful places, enjoy the Corvettes!

  4. Sometimes you just have to make tracks when the weather is going in the tank. That's what interstates are for, but that is all. If they have Corvettes on sale 2 for 1, make sure you pick me one up. Safe travels.

    1. We still didn't make it that far.

If you want to fork out the money and buy us the first one we would be more than happy to give you the second one for free! :-P

  5. Kevin, near the coast of Charleston, SC, we are suppose to get down to 32F by this coming Friday morning and Atlanta, GA down to 31F. If you can reduce your altitude and get below the latitude of Atlanta by Friday, you might feel some lows of 40s or 50s which, of course, is a good thing. Then, the water at the campgrounds along Natchez Trace may still be flowing.

    1. 32 last night up here on Vancouver Island as well! I hope it is not going to be a cold winter for you "down south".

    2. Croft, a low of 32F is about right for us this time of year; this cold front is coming in maybe one or two weeks early; those temperatures appear early in the AM, and then everything warms up to the 50s when the sun appears. This happens mostly in Dec., Jan., and Feb. We have had some surprises of 18F in February, but it's generally when ice hits the eastern seaboard in states above us like NC, VA, and northern GA. A low of 32F does not sound bad for Vancouver Island. Is that a low for the day?

    3. Yes, low over a 24 hour period, sometime in the middle of the night. Days are warmer, up in the 50's like you.

    4. We understand that Dee but we have things to see and hikes to do. We are Canadian so we are tough. ;-) It may cool down a fair bit but at least it will be sunny which does help a bit. It won't be long though and we should be in good weather for pretty much the rest of the winter.

  6. Nice to see the falls from a different perspective. You guys sure luck out on your overnights. Enjoy the museum!

    1. It is nice to see the falls from a different angle, just wish the sun had been at a better angle too, it made it hard to get a good shot of the waterfalls.

We don't consider it luck finding these overnight places. Kevin generally does some research into it and other times we see somewhere that looks good and then ask someone if it is ok to park there, most other people don't look for these other types of places they just head straight to Walmart.

  7. Be careful at that Corvette museum. You might be tempted to replace the little blue car with something slightly more powerful... ;c)

    1. That would be hard to do because we don't have the Little Blue Car anymore, I guess you missed that post! ;-)

    1. Chris, that seems like an aberration for northern Mexico! At least you can say, "and this too shall pass." By Saturday, I bet those nice northern Mexico temps will be right back up there. Excuse Croft and me while we drool!
