Easier said than done...

We had made plans to go for a morning bicycle ride with Doug, who lives in his fifth wheel near where we're parked here at Imperial Dam. We said that we would be there around 9:00am, but our fridge burner had been acting up over night and now that we have a replacement I decided to change it before we left for the bike ride.

But it was easier said than done!

The new burner itself looks exactly the same as the old one. Except for the gas orifice on the inside, which they've improved to be almost a one piece design attached to the fitting. It really is a better design, except that it turns out you also need to change the fitting on the gas line itself...and I didn't realize that until yesterday when I went to do the changeover.

So I had to do some more temporary repairs to the old burner and reinstall it. I'll have to get the gas line redone with a new fitting next time we're in town. Any RV repair shop should be able to do the job and it won't take them any more than 15 minutes. If I had a flaring tool I could do it myself, but I don't want to buy a flaring tool that I'll probably never use again.

Anyhow, with the fridge now working properly once more (for how long, I don't know!) we headed off on our bikes.

Bye Sherman!

Doug was ready to go, and off we went. There are a lot of trails in the area, as well as dirt roads. many of them are marked as government property, and some even say that trespassers will be prosecuted but Doug says he cycles them all the time and never has an issue. I think it's mostly to keep the ATV crowd away.

Off in the distance, I spotted a coyote!

Turns out there were two of them.

This is a new wetland.

Actually, not a new wetland, but a "reclaimed" wetland. The Bureau of Reclamation has a mandate in this area to put some things back to the way they were before the Colorado River was diverted in so many areas. They're still working on the project, and right now it's technically closed to visitors, although we learned that we can get in on bicycles.

Ruth and Doug.

Water in the middle of the desert.

This is all relatively new. It will be interesting to see it ten years from now.

A nice sunny day.

We ended up cycling about 10 miles (16 kms). We got back just in time for lunch, and we relaxed and caught up on the computer and read our books in the afternoon.

Overall, just a nice day!

In the evening, we watched the very first episode of "Parenthood". We know this has been a popular series, but we are televisionically challenged (as in, we don't have one!) so we've never watched the show. I had downloaded the complete season one and two on our old laptop, and the data was saved on the external hard drive we got from Doug the other day. So now we have some shows to watch on the new laptop!

RV tire covers are on sale at Amazon.com...great price to protect your tires from the sun...

  1. I have a feeling you might get sick of Parenthood - you should really be watching Breaking Bad! You would get a good laugh being in the desert with an RV and all... ;-)

    1. Thanks, but we are limited by our limited internet connection! Can't be downloading all kinds of stuff from expensive Verizon. If we get sick of Parenthood, I also have the complete series of The Munsters!

  2. I think fridge repairs should be on the top of the list but you still managed to enjoy the bike ride.

    1. And it certainly was especially since the days are quite hot again and we don't want any food to spoil. The repair that Kevin did seems to be holding up so we are happy about that and it only delayed our bike ride by an hour or so.

  3. I enjoyed watching the entire series of Parenthood. Just watched the final episode last week. Sometimes the characters get a bit annoying, but overall I liked it. Nice area to be biking! I can't stand coyotes. They used to terrorize the deer on my parent's farm in Wisconsin.

    1. We have now watched two shows of the first season. It seems Ok but sometimes just a little over the top, so we will see how the rest of the season goes.

I can understand how coyotes can be troublesome but they are part of nature and I think people have now learned that if you mess with nature (removing a particular animal, bird etc) ,that it then messes up the whole ecosystem in that area and sometimes has huge repercussions in the long run.

  4. Jim and Scooter ran off a coyote just outside our RV park yesterday morning. And that's right here in town. He and Scooter were hunting the same rabbits and Scooter told him in no uncertain terms to leave them alone. He must have been by himself because he took off down the road. Scooter chases rabbits until they start running and then she's done. lol

    1. I would love to have seen Scooter chasing off the coyote. Sounds like Scooter is a real "don't mess with me" kind of dog!

  5. Are bike helmets not required in the US ? The coyotes look like they need a good meal!

    1. There is no federal law requiring bike helmets, it is up to either State or local municipalities and the majority of those are for under 18 years old only, the same as Ottawa.

    1. Thanks Kristine, I am pretty sure that we did! We saw that several chairs were bought, it just doesn't tell us who bought them. :-)

  8. With our poor internet connection at the moment I'm not sure if my previous comment made it. Think you would like the town of Bisbee for sure. A very unique & artsy mountain setting. Bisbee exudes character. Lots of history in that whole area. Great hiking trails in & around Bisbee as well.

    1. Hi there Al, your previous post did go through but it was on the next day's post. I don't think we will make it to Bisbee this year a little too far of a detour but we will keep that in mind for the next time we are in the Arizona area. We are going to try to make it to Canyon de Chelly which you also mentioned in your other comment though. Thanks for the ideas.
