Staying in Berat another week

Our host lady Susana doesn't speak any English, so we do most of the communicating of anything important through her son using WhatsApp.

So when I made the dentist appointment for 11:30am yesterday morning, I let him know because although he had given me the dentist's name and number, I didn't know where the office was. He said "oh, my mother will take you there".

And so that's what happened.

It turned out it was only a ten minute walk down the road.

Using Google Translate, we told her she didn't have to stay with us, but she wanted to make sure I got in okay, and said she would leave once I was in.

The waiting area was not that busy when we arrived, but by the time I was called in it was standing room only!

The dentist was a young guy. He sat me down and had a look at my bridge problem. I thought that one of the anchor teeth was broken, and he said that yes it was possible, but maybe just that the glue had let go. He said that the bridge had to be removed one way or the other, so that's what he did.

It didn't come off very easily! I guess that's probably a good thing.

And sure enough, the one tooth was broken. He said it looked like it had been that way for some time, but I only noticed the problem a few days ago.

He did an X-ray with a fancy new handheld X-ray machine that produced the image almost right away. Fortunately, he said that the root is fine and there was no infection.

He mentioned a few different options for repair. Eventually, we decided that he will insert a screw into the root and build up the anchor point and reuse the same bridge. He said that is both the best and the cheapest way.

But, he couldn't do it yesterday. Too busy!

So he temporarily glued the bridge back in place using just the one anchor. He said I need to be careful with it, and I knew that. But, not for long, because I have another appointment for noon Wednesday to complete the procedure.

I asked how much I had to pay him for yesterday, but he said to wait until the job is complete. I never did ask him how much the total would be!

We were supposed to be out of the cottage Wednesday morning, so I contacted our host and asked if we could stay another week. Fortunately, we are okay to do that. There is more we wanted to see in the area, and a few day trips we wanted to do, so we will have no problem keeping busy with another week in Berat. And, we are really happy with our accommodation, and the mother is so friendly and always bringing us little treats.

  1. Consider visiting Sarande, Albania on the coast. It is across from Corfu, Greece. There are ferries to Corfu for the short trip. Sarande has so many bunkers there in case you have not seen enough! You are really taking us back to our time in Albania. We were in Berat in September 2019.

    1. We definitely have Sarande on our list for places to visit while we are here in Albania. It looks like a great place to visit with lots of things to see and do in the area.

We however won't be visiting Greece for two reasons, one and the main one is that we are not allowed to visit due to COVID. They are lifting some restrictions as of April 5th but non-EU members are not allowed unless you are from certain countries on their exempt list which we are not part of, even though we won't be arriving from Canada. Secondly, Greece is part of the Schengen Visa countries and that would then cut into our time if and when we do get to our motorhome. Once we get our motorhome and travel starts to open up we will eventually make our way to Greece but for now it will have to wait.

We are happy to hear that you are enjoying our posts and that we are rekindling some good memories for you. Berat is a really pretty town and we are certainly enjoying our time here.

    1. I doubt anyone "loves" going to the dentist but unfortunately sometimes it just can't be avoided!

  4. I don't have many dental problems, more luck than any thing. Except the time I had cow bone in a back tooth, I guess that's why I relate to cow's! Glad Kevin is feeling better, and will get it taken care of on Wednesday. You too take care, Rawn

  5. Staying another week does not sound too back, looks like a nice place to explore. Hope Kevin gets his bridge fixed and you can continue our adventures. Here in Canada we are still in lock down. Weather is slightly improving however. Stay safe!

    1. It isn't a bad thing at all, in fact we are quite happy that it has worked out this way. It is a lovely spot and there is still lots for us to explore yet. It has been a week and we still haven't even done any day trips in the car but that will change today.

Yes, we have been keeping up with the Canadian news as well as staying in touch with our families. Our daughter works in a restaurant in Ottawa and has been back at work now for about a month but as of today it looks like they are shutting down the restaurants once again. It's a good thing that she is able to work in the kitchen because so she is able to help prepare meals for pickup and delivery but it is still so frustrating for everyone.

  6. wow! How lucky for you to find a dentist so quickly and close to where you live! I hope your problem would be fixed without any complications. The cost would most likely be a lot cheaper there too than having it done here in Canada. You have been blessed with serendipitous instances to solve problems as they arise on this trip....Berat seems to be a good place to hang out for another week anyway.

    1. Yes, we were lucky and we were lucky that he could fit Kevin in. If not, there are lots of dentists here in town so we would have found another but we were told this guy is the best. Unfortunately it wasn't a simple fix but it is going to be very inexpensive to fix the issue, thankfully.

Berat is a great place to hang out for another week, especially because we still had things to see and do. :-)
