Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Mexico

Yesterday was Palm Sunday, the official start to Semana Santa  (Easter Holy Week) celebrations that go on all week. The little town of Valle de Juarez (population 4,006) goes all out with processions and parades to celebrate this holiday.

Yesterday, Ruth went into town with a group from the campground to see the Palm Sunday reenactment of Jesus arriving in Jerusalem.

Here comes Jesus and his crew!

And there's the donkey waiting to carry Jesus into Jerusalem.

Apparently Jesus rode a donkey because the animal is a symbol of peace.

Lots of people out enjoying the day.

Lots of flowery palm fronds.

Even the kids get in on the act.

Jesus, riding in to town!

Celebrations continue all week as children here are now on spring break and many workers have holidays. There will be another big procession on Friday as Jesus is led up the hill to be crucified.

  4. Semana Santa in Costa Rica was mostly a drunken free-for-all. With many accidents and sometimes fatalities. I used to steer clear of most of it.
    This looks pretty sedate.

  7. The man portraying Jesus looks like the gentleman on the black horse at the parade downtown the other day.
