Farmington, Maine

Thursday May 29…9:30pm

We had a very peaceful sleep last night. It would be nice if more campgrounds offered cheap basic facilities for overnight parking.

We filled up with gas in “tax free” New Hampshire. That’s not entirely the case, but it’s close. I admire New Hampshire…they have a seatbelt law, but only for under 18’s. The don’t have any retail sales tax. The sign upon entering the state reads “Common sense for all”. Their license plates say “Llive free, or Die”.

Anyhow, we put in 44 gallons (167 litres) for $171. With the price of gas over $1.30 a litre in Quebec it’s pretty easy to figure out why we’re taking this route.

We stopped at a parking lot near the Appalachian Trail. The trails weren’t actually part of the Appalachian Trail, but they did hook up with it. We did another 2 hour hike…the last half hour up the trail was very steep and required lots of stopping to catch our breath. Whiskey did okay though…not bad for a 12 year old dog. Isn’t that 84 years in human terms?

It was nice and sunny today, but also really windy. It’s kind of annoying driving a motrohome in that kind of wind, so we didn’t make it as far as we set out to. We’re camped out at Walmart in Farmington, Maine.

Tomorrow we were hoping to make it to the New Brunswick border, but that may not happen. We’ll see.
