The mining people got back to me with a January 19th date, which wasn't ideal. We had been hoping for two days later on the 21st.
We were waiting to hear back with confirmation, but in the meantime we needed to speed up our drive down the coast in case it did end up being the 19th. So we only stayed one night in Melaque.
Picked up our laundry, and hit the road heading south.
They have done a lot of road paving lately, and the roads were overall in better condition this year.
We had done this route last year around this time when we came down to visit Mark and Barb. However when we left last year, we headed north to Puerto Vallarta. This year, we are going in the opposite direction to Zihuatanejo.
We took the bypass around the big city of Manzanillo, and there is a viewpoint we stopped at.
Scenery along the way.
At the border as we entered the state of Michoacan, we were pulled over at a stop check by the military. They checked our passports, and I thought they were going to come inside for an inspection but they said we were free to go. We thanked them for their security, and moved on.
Then when we were only about 8 kms (5 miles) from our destination, traffic came to a stop. We sat for about ten minutes and then a guy with a sign came walking through explaining that there was a protest going on and they weren't letting any commercial vehicles through.
We've been through these things before in Mexico, and you just have to be patient. Eventually, they waved us into the opposite lane of traffic and we were able to proceed that way.
The vehicles on the right were not being allowed through.
Arrived at what used to be the Rancho Bougainvillea RV Park. Now, they no longer accept day to day campers and you have to stay a minimum of three months at a time. However they also sell lots and our friends Barb and Mark bought one of those lots last year. So we could visit with them and park on their lot for free.
So we visited with them and their son Shawn for the rest of the day and evening. Nice to see them again, but we can only stay the one night so we are moving on again today. This trip along the coast has become a little more rushed, but we're still enjoying ourselves.
