Well that was an interesting night. One that we wouldn't want to repeat!

We had planned to spend last night in Barcelona Airport waiting for our 11:15am flight to Halifax, Canada.

Instead, we spent it at a hospital in Barcelona!

Lets back up to yesterday afternoon to start this story.

We said goodbye to Auntie Nice around 1:00pm, and took the tube to Victoria Coach Station. We had tickets for the 3:00pm bus to Gatwick. I didn't realize it at the time, but I didn't buy the Gatwick "express" tickets... I had bought the milk run. So we ended up going to Heathrow first, and then Gatwick.

A wide range of architecture outside London's Victoria Station.

The Shakespeare Pub.

Tourist bus.

In the lounge at Gatwick Airport.

We ended up getting to Gatwick just before 6:00pm. We were quickly through security and having a drink in the lounge at 6:15pm.

Our flight boarded at 8:30pm. I had paid for the extra legroom seats, and we were in the second row. It was a Vueling flight from London Gatwick to Barcelona. The cost including an extra bag and the extra legroom seats was €82 ($133 CAD, $96 USD) each.

We took off exactly on time, and the flight was going along fine. I think we each had a little nap.

But then I started feeling hot and sweaty. It came on really suddenly. And then I got a little bit light headed. Strangely, I also felt a sudden urge to go to the bathroom. I was seated in the middle seat of the second row. I tapped the guy in the aisle seat on the shoulder, motioning that I needed to go to the bathroom. The bathroom was just three more steps in front of me, but I never made it that far.

I woke up on the floor with the flight attendants hovering over me as well as two doctors who just happened to be on board. Ruth thinks I might have been out for at least a minute. She was actually worried that I had kicked off. She said my eyes were wide open, but there was no recognition, and my face was white as a ghost. They were checking my blood pressure and saying that it was abnormally low. I felt like crap.

I really don't remember how long it took to get me back into a seat and strapped in for landing. They told me that they had radioed in a "medical emergency" and that there would be an ambulance and attendants waiting to take me off the plane.

They got me into the ambulance before anyone else was able to leave the plane. I have to say that the flight attendants and other passengers were absolutely great.

Inside the ambulance, there was a doctor and a medical technician who hooked me up to a bunch of monitors. I was actually starting to feel better by this point, but they insisted they were taking me to hospital for further tests. I didn't argue.

It was probably 1:00am when we arrived at the emergency at Bellvitge University Hospital in Barcelona. They wasted no time. In fact there was zero waiting at all. People prodding and poking and asking questions and inserting needles for taking blood and possibly attaching intravenous medications. They were really good at explaining what they were doing. Most spoke decent enough English.

I was wheeled down to radiology where they did two different chest x-rays.

Then into a room where Ruth could join me while we waited for blood test results.

I had a sleep for probably an hour, and started feeling much better. The doctors eventually came in saying that everything tested normally, but they wanted to monitor for a couple more hours. Again, nothing but good things to say about all the staff. They were great.

We were discharged at about 6:30am. They never gave us any indication as to what might have caused it, but I have a feeling it was either some kind of food poisoning or dehydration. Just grasping at straws though. At least everything else tested out normally, so that's good.

We don't purchase travel medical insurance, preferring to pay out of pocket as necessary. Having said that, this expense may or may not be covered by our credit card that comes with a variety of coverages. I haven't checked into it yet.

And how much was the bill? Well, the ambulance was free. The hospital stay and all the tests and exams came to €430 ($697 CAD, $502 USD). Not bad, all things considered.

Not feeling 100% yet, but good enough to do the walk to the local bus stop, and take the local bus to the airport.

Now in the premium lounge having some breakfast before our 7.5 hour 11:20am flight to Halifax, Canada. Lindsey is going to pick us up at the airport at 2;05pm local time in Halifax.

    1. Yes, it would have been syncope but that is just the medical term for fainting which is actually what Kevin did. I was definitely a scare for me when it first happened but as soon as he came to I was fine. Kevin said that we wasn't scared at all but that would just have been because he wasn't aware what had just happened to him. I was happy that he didn't hit his head either, I think his feet gave out and he went limp and just sort of sank down,, I believe his head ended up in the lap of the passenger in the isle seat of the first row.

      He was totally fine yesterday!

  2. Stay safe hope you made it back okay. Doesn't sound like food poisoning or you would have REALLY needed that bathroom. 😉Maybe dehydrated. Take care.

    1. Thank you and yes, we made it to Halifax without any other issue and Kevin has felt totally fine since.

We feel pretty strongly that it was a result of dehydration, Kevin doesn't drink enough water so I will be making sure that he does from now on.

  3. If you are anything like me, you don't drink much when traveling. That's where Dehydration kicks you in the backside. Hindsight is not good.
    Stay Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. It is true, Kevin does not drink enough water at any time, even when we are hiking he drinks far less water than I do but I will be making sure that he drinks more water from now on.

    1. Apparently fainting on an airplane is fairly common and can be a result of dehydration, low cabin pressure and from sitting too long and then standing up quickly. They say that it is normally not a reason for concern, especially after Kevin was throughly checked out by the medical staff at the hosptial.

  5. I'd say dehydration too..I've had a couple of episodes like that in Mexico. Electrolytes fixed me right up.

    1. We totally agree with you and think the same thing. When we woke up from a nap we both had very dry mouths. I drink more water than Kevin but from this point on I am going to make a point of us both drinking more water than we normally do, especially for Kevin because he really doesn't drink enough water.

  6. Kevin, Your episode sounds like me last year. I had two events similar to yours, but with much shorter "out" times. After second event I went to emergency and it was diagnosed as syncope and eventually a pacemaker was implanted. Since that time all is good. Hopefully you will not have any other events, but if so, maybe it will be something simple and easy to fix like syncope! Also, between my two events, all my vitals were completely normal, including heart rate.

    1. The staff at the hospital did a very thorough exam of Kevin's chest and heart and they said every checked out just fine and that there was no underlying issue.

Fainting on an airplane is fairly common and can be a result of dehydration, low cabin pressure, sitting too long and then standing up quickly, also a lack of sleep and we were definitely lacking in the sleep category. We are feeling that Kevin's episode is related to one or more of these reasons.

  7. I've had the same thing happen in Mexico...at a ladies lunch! They called an ambulance but I wouldn't go😁 Went home in a taxi and drank an electrolyte and was fine. Ive been careful ever since. I take BP meds but I think a lot of it is age as well.

    1. Should this have happened to Kevin anywhere else other than being on the airplane then he would have done much the same as you.

We don't think it is age related but who knows, we do think though that it was just something that can commonly happen on a flight due to a number of different conditions.

    2. I meant me not Kevin😁...in my 60's no problem but the 70's bring all sorts of surprises! I don't drink enough water either.

    3. We understand but when you say it's age related we know or have known lots of people in there 70's, 80's and 90's and rarely hear of any fainting issues with any of them, that is why we don't necessarily think that it is age related.

    1. Kevin felt totally fine all day yesterday and never had another issue. I am glad that we made it to our destination but it wouldn't have bothered us what the destination is. We have very quick and efficient service at the hosptial in Spain and we honestly aren't sure if it would have been so quick had this happened in Canada.

  9. Be glad you avoid the U.S. The ambulance ride alone would set you back at least $1K USD.

    1. Ain't that the truth! I had a bicycle accident at a campground and had to take an ambulance to the closest hospital, about 30 miles away. Even though I had insurance, the trip wasn't covered, and I had to pay over $1200 out of pocket just for the ride. Unbelievable!

  10. Glad everything turned out well. Keep an eye on things. I do remember getting food poison in Mexico once and had the exact same symptoms and outcome, only I passed out in the ocean and nearly drowned. Do take care!

    1. We are glad that it all ended up well and that Kevin doesn't seem to have any lingering effects from it, in fact other than being tired he felt totally fine all day, We are pretty sure that it was related to dehydration, lack of sleep and sitting for a long period of time and then standing up too quickly.

We are pretty confident that this was a one off occurrence but feel better knowing that all the tests and exams that they did at the hospital ruled out any heart issues or issues related to his medication.

So glad that you didn't drown when that happened to you!

  11. Wow, Kevin (and Ruth), what a scary experience. I'm glad everything seems a-ok for now. Sure hope there's nothing more serious going on than dehydration or stress.

    1. I think it was more scary for me than it was for Kevin because at the time he wasn't even aware of what happened to him. Thankfully everyone was amazing at helping us both and he had fantastic care at the hospital in Barcelona. They were so thorough, efficient and caring and they were able to rule out any issue with his heart or the medication related to it. We are pretty sure that it was a result of dehydration, lack of sleep and sitting for a lengthy period of time and then standing up quickly. He felt totally fine all day yesterday.

  12. I remember reading you had some minor medical issues at your last check up and they had given you meds for it. In any case, syncope might be the cause and there are various types including dehydration. Here in Arizona, it's not enough to drink water but to drink water or liquids with electrolytes. Folks loose a lot of salt from sweating especially during summer. My brother inlaw who works in construction passed out one morning while leaving for work. He needed electrolytes in his system. I'm glad you're okay and hope they find out what caused you to faint.

    1. Back in January 2024 in Penang, Malaysia Kevin had a full battery of heart health tests dine to rule out any possible heart issues and he came out with flying colours other than needing to take a very small dosage of blood pressure medication and a very small dosage of high cholestrol medication which have given him no issue over the past year and a half. After his thorough exam and tests at the hospital in Barcelona these all checked out fine so his fainting was not related to that.

We are pretty sure that it was due to dehyration, lack of sleep and sitting for a long period of time and then standing up quickly which apparently is a fairly common issue on airplanes due to the cabin pressure and the dry air within the cabin. In the future we will be sure to drink more water, especially Kevin because I already try to drink more water than him to start with.

  13. Glad to hear you are doing better. Maybe be an idea to get checked out in Halifax, just to be sure. Cheers

    1. Kevin totally felt fine all day yesterday and we think it was a one off occurrence.

We are only in Nova Scotia for 10 days which is not enough time to book an appointment with a doctor, especially when you don't have a family doctor here to begin with. We feel that the medical staff at the hospital in Barcelona did a very thorough job of checking Kevin out and finding nothing wrong with him, so we are happy enough with their prognosis. Obviously if this happens again we will then look further into seeing what might be causing this happen. We are pretty sure that it was caused by dehyration as the airplane cabin was very dry and he wasn't drinking any water.
