Day 9 - The magnificent scenery of Prince Christian Sound, Greenland

One of the highlights of this trip was the planned scenic cruise through Prince Christian Sound in Greenland. It sometimes doesn't happen due to fog or bad weather, so when we woke up Friday morning to fog, it wasn't looking good.

However the captain obviously knew more than we did, and as we neared the entrance into the fjord,  things started clearing up and it became a beautiful blue sky day!

Prince Christian Sound is a 100 km (60 mile) long scenic waterway at the southern tip of Greenland that connects the Labrador Sea to the Irminger Sea.  The long fjord system is mostly surrounded by steep mountains reaching over 1,200 metres (3,900 ft), one of them at 2,220 metres (7,280 ft) high. Three large glaciers go straight into the water where they calve icebergs.

It's absolutely spectacular, and even the captain said later that it was a highlight of his career.

One of my favorite photos of the day!

Most of the people were up on the top deck.

I wonder how many thousands of photos were taken.

We saw a lot of waterfalls.

Just a beautiful day!

There was a fairly large (but tiny compared to us) catamaran going through as well.

Glacier.

You can see the distinct difference in the water color.

We would end up passing the catamaran.

Zoomed in on the mountain tops.

Another glacier.

We eventually passed the catamaran.

We decided to take a break and go do our workout for an hour in the gym. It would have been too busy in the gym later on, plus the gym overlooks the front of the ship so we still had good views while working out.

View from my elliptical machine!

Our huge ship has to weave its way though these two ice bergs.
We went through very slowly.

Looking back at the catamaran that is now following us.
Compare the catamaran to the size of the iceberg we had to pass so close to.

Looking forward as we get closer to the end.

Another glacier.

Years ago, there would have been a glacier here as well.

Greenland if covered by the largest ice sheet in the world, second only to Antarctica. The mountains that you see are only close to the coast, although who knows what mountains lay under the giant ice sheet that covers the interior of Greenland.

Another glacier.

We exited the fjord system and headed northeast through the open sea towards Reykjavik, Iceland.

Once out in the open, we saw a massive iceberg way off in the distance.

Dinner menu.

80's dance show evening entertainment.

What a fantastic day we had. We were so lucky to have had such perfect weather!

So, another two sea days and then we arrive in Iceland. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for Iceland isn't looking so great. Fingers crossed they are wrong!

We are very happy with our trip, definitely a different form of travel for us but it has been such a great way to see Greenland.

  2. When I was a kid (1952), we lived on a US Air Force Base at Narsarsuaq Greenland. Your photos bring back a lot of memories.

    1. Wow, we can't even imagine what it must have been like for you back then, especially being a kid. It would have been quite a different life than it would have been growing up in the US. We are glad that we could rekindle some old memories for you.

    1. We really did luck out with the weather, we honestly couldn't have asked for a better day. It is true, while the photos came out beautifully they never really show you what it is like in real life, nothing can other than being there.

    1. Thank you. The vast majority are done with my expensive smartphone that I bought due to the quality of the camera... an Honor Magic 5 Pro. A few are done with Ruth's smartphone, a much cheaper Honor brand phone.

    1. Many of the icebergs weren't huge but they were still big and definitely lovely to see. The glaciers were amazing with the white and blue in the snow and ice. We were so lucky to have such a perfect day weatherwise.
