Getting settled in

We've got a small bachelor apartment sized Airbnb for a month here in Ottawa. It's actually set up really nicely, but it's still pricey for what you get. Welcome to Canada, I suppose.

We're paying $1,850 CAD ($1,340 USD) for the month.

I'll show you some pics tomorrow.

We also have a rental car for a month. I had booked a small car, simply to save on the cost of fuel, but when I went to pick it up they were overbooked and people were renting cars for the long weekend. All they had was a minivan, so I took it. To their credit, they gave me the option to go back and exchange it for something smaller this week.

It's a 2027 Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

Obviously that's more than we need, but it's brand new with only 50 kms (30 miles) on it. And it's fully loaded with all the toys. I might just keep it for the month! It's costing $30.50 CAD ($22.10 USD) per day.

It still had the options list in the vehicle.

And the price... $60,000 CAD ($43,500 USD) before tax.

Next up was to get some groceries. Of course the fridge and cupboards were empty, and we're here for a full month. So we've made two separate grocery shopping trips over two days.

A total of $245 CAD ($177 USD) between the two photos. Oh, and another $12 for a bottle of wine.

That will keep us going for a week or so. It will be interesting to see what the full month totals out to in this department.

And, we joined a gym!

Loads of equipment, and not many people!

A one month membership cost $119 CAD plus 13% tax is $134.47 CAD ($98 USD) per person.

So, we go to the gym every day. It's exactly a 3 km (1.8 mile) walk, so we do a half hour power walk to get there, then approximately a one hour workout while there, then another half hour power walk back home. Two hours of solid exercise every day! Gotta keep moving!

  1. Yep, a whole lot more pricey than the Mexican lifestyle! You eat very similarly to us. Quality food is expensive. I'm glad we have our garden, which helps a little, but our grocery bill is still really high. You were smart to join the gym. Definitely gives you something to do and not a bad price for a month.
