Flooding cancelled our boat trip...

The plan was to arrive in Guilin, spend a night there, and then be at the docks by 9:00am to do a four hour boat cruise down the Li River to Yangshou and our next accommodation. This is a very popular cruise through some of China's most amazing scenery.

But Typhoon Maysak had other plans for us.

Unlike these people, the area we are in was only catching the outer edge of the storm. Sunday overnight, we got 140mm (5.5 inches) of rain. But it was still raining throughout the morning.

So Monday morning, when we were supposed to be relaxing on the river cruise, we decided to relax in the room until checkout time at noon, and take a Didi taxi to our next accommodation in Yangshuo. The private taxi was only about $7 more than taking the train for the 75 km (46 mile) ride and we would get door to door service.

Scenery along the way.

Arrived at our guesthouse (actually more of a boutique hotel)  to find that it wasn't very busy there which surprised me given that July and August are supposed to be the prime months for domestic tourism. The check in desk tried to upgrade us to two other rooms and even insisted on showing them to us. But based on the photos and descriptions, I was pretty confident that we would be happy with the room we had booked and didn't feel the need to upgrade.

And I was right...

Our large room has big floor to ceiling windows and a beautiful view.

We are on the fourth floor of a six floor building.

The bed is a little different, on a raised platform rather than a frame of its own.

The facilities.

View out the front window.

View out the side window.

We're here for five nights, so we wanted something a little more comfortable since we don't plan to be on the go at all times. Besides, it's nice to splurge a little when you're in an inexpensive country!

We're paying 254 yuan ($53 CAD, $37.50 USD) per night including breakfast.

We relaxed for a little while then went out to find something to eat and wander around a bit. Just down the road is a local noodle shop. Not fancy, but you can get a bowl of rice noodles and meat for 12 yuan ($2.50 CAD, $1.75 USD).

Then we found a walking path that led to a river.

This guy was rototilling his rice field.

The street our guesthouse is on.

Modern construction techniques using bamboo scaffolding.

This little stream is full.

We passed this fancy property.

The kids were playing with tame deer.

Not sure what it was because there were no signs saying it was a hotel and it was all walled off.

Yikes. The main river is definitely flooding.

You can definitely see the attraction of the scenery on this area.

This river normally hosts casual rafting trips, but they are all closed up right now.

The path is really nice, but also used by small electric scooters that are rented to tourists in the area.

Scenery along the way.

Yep, the river is high.

These are the rafts that usually do leisurely rides at this part of the river.

We saw another Chinese motorhome.

This one appears to be a rental unit.

This parking lot was closed due to flooding.

The heavy rain has stopped, but it will take a few days for the flooding to recede.

Not sure what this is, but it can't be used right now!

Saw this local guy with two cormorants. We think they use them for fishing.

The scenery is beautiful.

So as we're walking back to the guesthouse, we come across this...

A campervan with license plates from Spain!

I mean, I think we're pretty adventurous, but can you imagine the route you have to take to drive from Spain to China? And the logistics involved with getting across some of those borders? Wow.

Back at the hotel, a few photos of the property...

Nice gardens.

Not sure what this is... do they make their own beer?

The breakfast area.

I was reminded that we haven't shown you a map recently.

This was the drive we did yesterday. You can zoom out to see where this is in relation to the rest of the country.
