Issyk-Kul is a saline lake... so it is salt water, but not as salty as ocean water. And because of the salt and depth, it never freezes in winter, despite the cold that Kyrgyzstan experiences.
But it is still chilly at this time of year...
There they go!
It stays shallow for quite a while.
Ruth, Bjorn, Freya.
We had breakfast, packed up camp, and hit the road...
The entire south shore on the lake is undergoing major road construction.
We turned off to do a canyon drive.
Very cool.
There are a lot of unspoiled beaches on this lake.
We set off on a hike up to that viewpoint. There was a couple from Netherlands hiking up there too.
Scenery on the way up.
Weird.
Zoomed in on Vladdy and the Toyota. Reminds me of free camping in the Baja many years ago.
From the viewpoint, there is a ridge walk at the top.
Freya and Bjorn.
Scenery along the way.
Heading back on the ridge walk.
Back in the vehicles, we headed a little bit into the mountains to another viewpoint and to find a campsite for the night.
More road construction.
A yurt camp up in the mountains.
Hiking up to another viewpoint.
Wow. Spectacular views.
The path ahead.
Ruth, bringing up the rear.
Keeping in mind that the lake you see in the background is already at 1,600 meters!
Gorgeous views.
Our campsite for the night!
Someone had asked for more info on the rooftop tent that Bjorn and Freya are using. Unfortunately there are absolutely no markings or tags saying who the manufacturer is. Very strange... however here are some photos...
