Dentist update

We relaxed most of the day yesterday, however we did go out in the afternoon to do some grocery shopping. We will be eating out a little bit while we're here, but we'll also be doing some cooking at home.

First stop was a fruits and veggies store...

Regular readers know that we love to go to the local market in many countries, but we have yet to find which day they have one here... or maybe they don't. Anyhow we are in a very local non touristy neighborhood and there are three fruit and veggie stores within a five minute walk, so we stopped in to one of them.

All of this for 1,000 lek ($16.40 CAD, $11.95 USD).

Certainly more expensive than it has been in past visits due to the strength of the Albanian lek and the weakness of the Canadian dollar. We're guessing that it is either on par with what it might cost in Mexico, or perhaps slightly more expensive. And it's definitely more expensive than the markets in Turkiye, however that has likely changed in the past year as well.

We also stopped in at the Big Market store which is an Albanian grocery store chain. Picked up some of my favorite beer which has fortunately not gone up by very much. It cost 85 lek for one 500ml can last year, and now it has gone up to 89 lek ($1.45 CAD, $1.06 USD).

I had a 7:00pm appointment at the dentist, so we arrived a few minutes early just in case he was ahead of schedule. It turned out we sat for an hour waiting, but that was okay since he had squeezed me in at the last minute.

This open space in front of the church was literally a parking lot last time we were here.
They've done a great job fixing it up!

Finally got in the chair, and he took some xrays. He showed me how he had repaired the tooth four years ago, and he showed me why there is a problem. The tooth itself is fine, but the bone and gum around it has weakened due to stress, and the tooth is actually slightly loose, which I hadn't even noticed. He said that while it might last another year, the risk of infection is high. He suggested we remove that tooth, and make a new bridge. Which is exactly what the dentist in Scotland had suggested.

Didn't even ask about the cost, since we've been to this guy three times now and it has always been so cheap that it's almost ridiculous. Expecting it to be higher than normal, but mostly due to the exchange rate.

So, back to him Monday morning to have the extraction done (he said it would take about ten minutes!) then the bridge work later in the week after a couple of days of healing.

  1. Ugh, dental work! Sorry you have to have that done, but I guess it can't be helped. That's a great price for all those veggies, by US standards. We are fortunate to have our garden for many things, especially lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, and assorted greens. I do miss the wonderful Mexican mercados!

    1. Thanks, Emily! Yeah, dental work is never fun but like you said it has to be done and it helps to know that it isn't going to be super expensive here in Berat with our dentist.

We thought that the price wasn't too bad either, especially compared to back home in Canada or in the US. We are looking forward to see what the prices will be like when we find out where and when the weekly/village market is and go to that. It is nice that you have a nice garden to grow a lot of the basic veggies. My mother used to have a real big garden full of veggies when we were growing up. We miss the Mexican markets as well. The Turkish markets were great too!
