A beautiful day in Galway, and now doing some driveway camping!

It was a gorgeous sunny day yesterday here in western Ireland!

Wednesday night, we had been parked a few miles east of the city of Galway. I found us a good free parking spot just north of the city, but it would mean a 3.5 km walk just to get to the central area. But with hardly a cloud in the sky, we decided that was our best option.

Galway is a nice small city of about 80,000 people. It's popular with the tourist crowd as well, and we noticed a lot of American accents. As well as French. Apparently a lot of tourists visit from France.

A beautiful day in Galway.

First stop was Galway Cathedral. It is the youngest of the many magnificent stone cathedrals in Europe. Only built in 1965...

Galway Cathedral.

The contrast between the stone and the wood is magnificent.

Organ pipes and wood ceiling.

From there, we wandered over to the Shop Street area which is the main pedestrian zone in the central area with a lot of shops, pubs, and restaurants.

The Kings Head Pub is located in an 800 year old building.

We both noticed this beautiful flowering vine on the building in the photo above. Upon closer inspection, it's fake! But really well done.

The 17th century Lynch's Castle.

Spanish Arch.

Near Galway Harbor.

Scenery along the way.

We ended up doing around 11 kms (7 miles) from the time we left Max until the time we returned to Max. That's over 40 kms (25 miles) of walking/hiking in the last four days!

We need a break!

We've been communicating with long time blog reader Nora who lives near Galway. She's been following our travels for a long time, going back to our motorhome in Mexico days. And we finally made it to Ireland, but she's not here! She and her husband have taken their own motorhome to Spain. Anyhow, she offered us the use of their driveway so that we can spend a night or two and relax and be able to fill with water and empty our tanks.

And with rain in the forecast for today, this will be a nice place to hangout. Thanks Nora!

  1. What an adorable city; love all the flags and colors; reminiscent of Mexico, but in a distinctly Irish manner! Very cool that you can driveway surf; that was convenient!

    1. It was a very pretty city and just a nice size, We really love how so many of the town town shop and restaurant areas are so clean and brightly colored and all the flags here just added to the ambience of the area. I think it was even more colorful than Mexico but as you said in a very Irish way.

It was lovely of Nora to offer up their driveway for us to "camp" at, it was just a shame that she and Neil weren't home, we were so looking forward to meeting them. Hopefully our paths will cross another time.
