The older you get, the more important it is...

Over the coming months, we will both turn 65 years old. Ruth in November, and me in February... and we will then be official senior citizens! We'll be able to retire and travel the world...LOL!

Regular readers here know that we try and stay physically active. And while traveling, we find that it's fairly easy to get in a sufficient amount of cardio exercise... but the muscular exercise has been lacking.

And the older you get, the more important this type of exercise is.

Yup. Pretty much!

So we need to make more effort, especially while traveling.

Back when we had a house and a "normal" life, it was easy to have a workout routine. In fact, there was a time when Ruth actually worked at a fitness club and was able to use the equipment there. And I had a very well equipped home gym. We were both in the best shape of our lives when we were about 42 years old.

Well, now that we have a house again, even though it's only part time, we are investing in a little bit of equipment to keep us in shape. Just some dumbbells and a small bench and some exercise bands for now.

This will do for now.

It's actually amazing how many exercises you can do with dumbbells. And there are a lot of youtube videos that demonstrate them.

And so, we do our 45 minute 5 km (3 mile) power walk every day, plus a 45 minute muscle workout. Arms and shoulders one day, chest and back the next, and legs and abs after that. Then repeat. It won't take long to get back in decent shape!

And on that note... time to go for our walk!

  1. Good going - yes, resistance exercise is super important as we age. We had dumbbells in our RV and also bought quite a collection while living in Mexico. They were very easy to sell when it was time to leave! Once we moved back to the US, we bought more, although we now only use them once a week and focus on upper body. We've never felt the need to divide the upper body into separate workouts. I know serious bodybuilders do that, but we're not in that category; we are able to work all the main muscle groups from the waist up in one solid workout. We don't do much leg work since we do so much cycling. In the past year, since I turned 65 in April and became more aware of the need, I've added mobility and balance work as well. We get a lot of full-body exercise from yard work also. If you don't use it, you lose it!
