April Expenses

What did it cost us to tour Veracruz and into Oaxaca for the month of April?

Well, we spent a total of $2,799 CAD ($2,060 USD) for the month, but of course that also included the rent on our house.

Here's how it all broke down (the following figures are in $CAD)...

Fuel: Gasoline is expensive in Mexico, and Igor uses a lot of it! We drove about 1,200 kms (750 miles) and spent $636 on gasoline. But, we started with an empty tank and ended with over half.

Toll roads: We try and avoid toll roads, but sometimes they make sense. We spent a total of $40.

Here's the approximate route we took...

Groceries: We did really well on groceries during April, especially considering we really didn't eat out very often. Of course Igor's fridge is pretty much empty as we are heading back to the house. We spent $317 on groceries.

Meals out: We ate out 8 times during the month. A total of $180. 

Alcohol: A total of $85. Not bad.

Miscellaneous: This category is always higher than we expect it to be. I'm going to have to purposely budget for higher than I think it should be, because something always comes up. Anyhow, we spent $347. A big chunk of that is on internet access! Between the $163 for Starlink, $23 for cell, and $32 for our house, internet access cost us $218 of that $347. Of course it's the Starlink that's expensive, but, we like being able to be online anywhere.

Entertainment: A cave tour, toboggan in Orizaba, botanical gardens, museum, the Veracruz Aquarium. We did quite a lot for $85.

Overnight: We spent the entire month in Igor, and our overnight costs added up to $344. Not bad considering that includes two nights in a hotel in Veracruz! Plus our rent at the house of $538, the total was $883.

Motorhome: The monthly cost of insurance and registration, plus some minor repairs. Actually, the one repair wasn't so minor, but mechanics in Mexico are cheap. Total was $227.

So, a grand total of $2,799 CAD ($2,060 USD).

May will be FAR more expensive. We've got a busy travel month ahead of us. In fact the next two months will be expensive. Plus we're renting a Russian built 4x4 campervan in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and that's not cheap either. But it sure will be an adventure! We have a budget of $6,300 CAD ($4,635 USD) for the month.
