The price of water

Most people know that you don't drink the tap water here in Mexico. Even the locals buy bottled water. Normally, you buy a 20 liter (5.3 gallons) jug full of purified water. The jug is called a garrafon.

Once you have made the initial purchase and have drank all the water, you can exchange your empty garrafon for a full one.

But this year, we noticed that the price to exchange has really gone up. It's now 60 pesos ($4.60 CAD, $3.35 USD). Plus of course we have to use the ATV to go do the exchange.

There is a self serve refill place at the gas station in nearby El Arco. It's the best deal, at only 15 pesos ($1.15 CAD, $0.85 USD) but of course we still need to use the ATV to go into town to get it. We don't mind the price... but it's the aggravation of going to get the refill done once or twice a week.

So we decided to look for another option.

The 10 liter Ecofilter Twist.

We ordered one from Amazon Mexico and it arrived yesterday. It has a ceramic gravity fed filter and you just pour tap water in the top, and it drips through the filter to become purified water out the bottom. It takes about an hour and a half to get 1.5 liters of purified water.

You pour the water in here.

It wasn't super cheap though, at 1,962 pesos ($150 CAD, $109 USD) so it will take a while to pay for itself. But the convenience of not having to run out to refill the garrafon so often will be worth it.

Interestingly, it's made in Guatemala and is not available in Canada or the U.S..

In other news, our flooring arrived as part of our Amazon delivery yesterday. Unfortunately it's not as good quality as the one I had installed in our old motorhome Sherman many years ago, but it will have to do.

I got this much done before calling it a day.

And, we spoke to a young couple yesterday who are going to be spending the month of February 2027 here at out house. The means we now have February, March, and April booked for next year. Still looking for prospective tenants for November, December and January.
