Interesting stuff... the English cemetery at Mineral del Monte, Mexico

I've mentioned in previous posts that mining specialists arrived from Cornwall, England to Veracruz, Mexico in the early 1800's. They had an arduous journey to get from Veracruz to the Pachuca area in Hidalgo dragging their steam engines along the way. Some died of yellow fever along the way.

There were about 130 men originally, followed by many more in the 1840's and 1850's. Eventually, about 350 men, some of whom had brought their families, had emigrated to this area of Mexico to work in the silver mines that had been bought by a British company.

We set out Tuesday morning to do some more exploring and hiking to get some better views of the area, and to stop by the English cemetery where many of the Cornish miners and their families ended up.

This is where Igor has been parked the last two nights. Yes, there are doggies around!

Ruth, coming up the hill behind me.

Beautiful views.

We ended up at the English Cemetery.

There are 750 tombs here, the oldest dating to 1834.

It's a really pretty setting with lots of large pine trees.

Some random tombstones.

Some are more recent.

Of course the descendants became "Mexican", and with Mexican first and middle names, but decidedly British last names.

There are quite a few little graves as well.

And many that are simply unmarked.

Interesting stuff.

We relaxed for the afternoon, then walked into town to pick up our laundry. Nice to have everything washed, dried, and folded for you at a decent price!

Our weather has taken a bit of a downturn. It was chilly last night, and it's overcast this morning and they're calling for a high of only 15C (60F) today! And a chance of rain.

But we're moving on this morning to a canyon 45 minutes north of here called Barrancas de Aguacatitla where there are some unique basalt rock formations.
