The camera on our new phone

I'm pretty impressed!

We bought a new smartphone... a very expensive one. The main reason we bought it is because we want to travel with as little as possible. It's just so much easier that way. So I wanted to ditch our big camera. And I figured that if I'm going to travel with a phone anyhow, then why not get a phone that has a really good camera in it.

After doing hours of research, I decided that the best phone for our needs is the Honor Magic5 Pro.

Never heard of it?

That's because it's not available in North America. It's only available in UK, Europe, and Asia.

When comparing the cameras on all the high end smartphones, there is no doubt that they all take great photos. However the Honor Magic5 Pro takes great photos, and at a much lower price point. $300 to $400 cheaper than the Samsung S23 Ultra, or the iPhone 14 Pro.

One of the main things I was going to miss on our heavier standard camera is the zoom capabilities. But I did some test shots this morning to give you an idea of what this phone is capable of in that regard.

These photos were all taken with me standing in exactly the same spot, and without me cropping. Centering on the basketball net...

Ultra Wide Angle.

Standard 1:1 photo.

3.5x zoom.

10x Zoom.

40x Zoom.

This is about as close as I can get without starting to lose image quality. It actually goes to 100x zoom, but it's a little unrealistic because you would never get satisfactory image quality past the 40x level.

But even at 40x zoom, it's very impressive.

  1. Be sure to get a good phone protective cover. With the number of pictures you take, one slip and your very expensive phone/camera will be very expensive to replace!

    1. The actually comes with a protective cover. It's not as robust as the Otterbox one I had on the other phone, and I wouldn't want to drop it on the pavement, but it's better than nothing. Yes, I will have to be careful.

  2. How difficult is it to see the screen when you are out in the sunlight like you were for the samples?

    1. Not difficult at all. One of the reasons I bought this phone is because of the very highly rated display. In fact, in that regard it ranks #2... higher than either the iPhone 14 Pro or the Samsung S23 Ultra.

  3. It sounds like you got a good deal. The zoom function is fantastic! Yep, the problem with most phones like my Samsung 52A is the sun on the screen. Irritating. My laptop now sits on the sidelines for specific purposes and my cellphone is first choice. We have the Canon we bought four years ago and now we hardly ever use it.

    1. We think that we got a good deal on the phone, we will know more over time.

Kevin said the display screen is rated high for functioning well outside, again we will find out if that is the case as Kevin uses it more.
