New hiking boots!

We had always been fans of Merrell hiking boots until the last couple of pairs we bought that didn't last as long as we thought they should have. So on October 10, 2019 we each bought a new pair of Oboz hiking boots.

Well they are now due to be replaced. In fact, they've been due for a month or two now and we've been actively looking for new ones. But, we're pretty happy with how long the Oboz boots lasted, and in fact we would be happy to buy that brand again.

So, we got two years and four months out of them. Certainly far better than the several pairs of Merrells we have gone through in less time.

But, we can't find Oboz hiking boots here in Turkey. In fact, it's been difficult to find any higher quality hiking boots.

Yesterday we went for lunch with Australian couple Vera and Bob. That's three days in a row we've had lunch out! Anyhow, after lunch Vera came with us to do some shopping and try to find some boots. She and Bob have been here for a while and she knew of some other stores to try.

I had found a hunting and fishing store here in Antalya that has an online website that listed some boots that seemed good quality, so we went there. It turned out to be a fairly small store, but with a big online presence. And it was pretty much a one man operation! We met the owner Ali, who showed us what he had in stock. I really liked the boots, but he didn't have my size. He said he could order them and have them here in two or three days.

We decided to look around a bit more, and ended up at a big modern shopping mall. The normal sports stores had good selections of running shoes... Nike, Adidas, Reebok... stuff like that, but very few hiking boots. I guess hiking is not as much of a "thing" here in Turkey. I did buy some inexpensive walking shoes for 299 lira ($27.75 CAD, $21.75 USD).

I ended up ordering the ones from the hunting and fishing store. They're an Italian brand, and they have the Vibram soles that we like. Cost was 1,380 lira ($127 CAD, $100 USD). I'm really happy with the price, but only time will tell how long they last.

Unfortunately, they didn't have any women's sizes at all, so Ruth is still on the lookout.

So, we are "stuck" here in Antalya for another two or three days. It's supposed to rain on and off, so our stretch of beautiful weather finally ended, but we'll still get out and do stuff. There's a canyon just north of the city we want to visit, so we'll head up there.

    1. We are happy to hear that you enjoy reading our posts of our adventures, we certainly do have some funny moments along the way. It really was quite funny when the guy tried to tell us that his English wasn't very good after talking to us early in quite good English. As you said, it was amazing that he could keep a straight face while saying this! I am glad that we can turn frustrating moments like this into funny stories.

We have used two places in Texas that did good work on Sherman, the best one was in Amarillo at S&L Automotive and Truck Service but unfortunately we don't know of any that are closer to you in Louisiana.

  2. Having gone shopping with you two and walking kms thru the streets in search of the elusiove hiking boots, I can now see how easily you eat up the distance on all those real hikes.

    1. I hope that we didn't wear you out too much, you looked like you did just fine. When we are walking through the city like that we often don't even think about how far we may have gone.
