Our route south

I ordered Max's new propane tanks yesterday and woke up to an email this morning saying they had been shipped and would arrive by Thursday at the latest.

I had contacted our guy at the dealer so he knew to expect them. They treat us really well there. I asked if they had time to fill them and install them prior to our arrival, and he said worst case scenario they would certainly help me do it when we arrive, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them installed and ready to go.

That got me thinking about our route south for the three months of October through December. We've got 26 days remaining on our allotted Schengen time before we have to be out of Europe so we will use that amount of time to get to the Croatia border.

From there, it's a bit of a question mark depending on what the weather is doing. We want to get to Greece by around December 8 because by then we'll have another 23 days of Schengen time so we can use that to stay in Greece. If the weather is nice, we'll take the inland route through Bosnia and Herzegovina, but if it's not warm enough we'll take the coastal route.

Route south.

Then through Albania and into Greece around Thessaloniki. Using up our time there should take us into Turkey around January 1st for three months there.

That's the plan, but there are a lot of variables. One of course is the weather. Without getting a residence permit, we're only allowed three months in Turkey. Which should be fine. But if it's still too chilly for motorhoming, accommodation is really cheap in Bulgaria and Max is small enough we can rent an apartment for a few weeks and use Max for running around in.

Anyhow, just over three weeks remaining here in Canada and then the adventure will begin!

And in Canada...

  1. When you are in Slovenia stop off at Bled and see Lake Bled. There is a castle in the middle of the lake. When going thru Montenegro visit Kotor on the Bay of Kotor. This is a fjord where cruise ships come in from Adriatic. Consider visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia after B & H before going into Montenegro. It will be more scenic.

    1. Lake Bled has been on our list of places to visit for quite some time, so that will hopefully be one of our must see spots as we make our way through Slovenia. As for the others, if we don't see these countries well enough this time there will always be the next time. We have a basic route planned but not an exact one with the different spots that we want to see but like most places, we will take our time and see as much as we can, especially hitting places that the majority of people never take the time to see. Thanks for the suggestions. :-)

  2. Agree with above. Croatia is beautiful and can be busy. Montenegro coast is beautiful as well and I also liked inland. Lake Bled and surrounds us lovely and full of history.i also really enjoyed Serbia. Greece is different again. And of course,I love Turkey. Can't wait to read about your travels. Hopefully, covid settles and travel will be easier. We will be fully vaccinated this week so look forward to future, safe travels.

    1. Yes, we are expecting Croatia to be fairly busy but we should be fine if we stick to the less seen places, which is what we normally love to do. We are looking forward to seeing Lake Bled and hopefully the fall colours will still be around then, as well as the fact that there should be less people around at that time of year.

We are really looking forward to seeing all these different places, there will be such a mixture of culture and scenery as we make our way through these different countries. We are pretty excited about our fall and winter travels. :-)

Hoping that you will be able to get out and do some traveling yourselves this winter.

  3. Sam and I appreciate you so much! Your posts are inspirational and encouraging. In 2020 we were on the road in the US for over 10 months, and never once at an “RV Park”. Our current trip from San Antonio has us waking up in a park outside La Mauricie National Park, where we spent the day yesterday, logging in 6 hiking miles. I often wonder how many others you’ve inspired. You’re the best!

    1. We are so happy to hear that you find our blog posts so inspirational, and that we have inspired you both to get out and travel and boondock. That is fantastic that you were able to go 10 months without having to go to a proper RV park. Like you, we think there are just so many options out there without having to park up in a park where you are crammed in with piles of other RV's. Continue on your journey and enjoy every waking minute of it. :-)
