More great views around Berat, Albania

As was forecast, we woke up to another beautiful blue sky day. And the temperature is also rising as they said it would with an expected high of 18C (65F). That's near perfect hiking weather in our minds so we packed a lunch and set off across the river and up a hill with a different view.

The hill across the river is actually higher than the one that the castle is on.

The trail begins on the opposite side of the river so you have to walk across the pedestrian bridge and then through the community of Gorica.

We have already walked across the bridge, and looking back.

Can you see the church?
It blends into the rock wall very well!

Walking through the community of Gorica.

It doesn't take long to get a view.
And what a great view it is!

We try and show the good and the bad. Even in beautiful areas, there are parts that aren't so beautiful. As we showed with Tirana. We really liked the central parts of that city, but the outskirts weren't so nice.

Well, not everything is rosy here in Berat either. There is more to the city than just the central area.

As an example, this part of the city is just a mess of apartment buildings.

Olive orchards.

Looking west.

Heading higher.

We made it to the first ridge and there was a view looking down at the castle.

Looking down on Berat.

This is where we sat and had our lunch!

So we're sitting eating lunch, and Ruth happened to turn around and said "oh, look at this"!

Here was this little pup looking very hungry. The problem is, we have learned in the past that if you show a stray dog any attention he may be yours for life!

He had a collar, but didn't look like he had belonged to anyone in quite some time.

We let him lick out our yogurt containers, and left a few crumbs behind for him so that when we took off he would hopefully not follow us. And fortunately, we never did see him again.

We made it along the ridge, with views on both sides and up to the highest point 413 meters (1,350') above the city.

We are headed down through the village of Drobonik.

Lots of these pretty wildflowers blooming.

Imagine waking up to this guy's view every morning!

Baby goat and mommy goat.

Back at the city.

What a great hike. We were gone three and a half hours and did 11.7 kms (7.3 miles).

Not sure what's on the agenda today, but it's another beautiful day.

  2. I noticed, also in Turkey, almost all the buildings are white.
Any reason that you know of other than the heat?

    1. In the old town the houses are definitely all white and that is because that was the original colour back then and because it is a UNESCO site they cannot be painted any other colour. The newer, residential part of town however does have houses and buildings that are different colours, the camera doesn't always pick it up well from a distance though.

    1. It certainly is a beautiful place, we are really enjoying this area.

That is the idea, we want to stay healthy and fit! Also by hiking we can see things that you can't always see if you are driving in a car.

  5. Beautiful scenery! You see a lot of that when you get out and explore. I have done Volks and places I've, and I couldn't believe how much I had missed, when I got out of my car.

    1. Absolutely beautiful views! We envy that guy as well, it would be fantastic to wake up each morning to his view.

Berat is definitely a very special spot, and with the old town and castle area it is no wonder that it is UNESCO site.

  7. That poor little pup! I understand why you couldn't feed him more, but I just feel so bad for the strays.

    1. Yep, we feel the same way. I really wish there was more that we could do for it, we always feel badly too. My heart really goes out to them. :-(
