Bike ride to the pretty little village of Pakenham

It's been a little windy this past week and so we haven't been out on the bikes. But yesterday, the wind had calmed down a bit and so we got out early on the bikes for a ride down to the village of Pakenham.

We had to bike on the highway for about half the trip, but on the second half we got onto a rail trail. Not that scenic, and pretty much flat. But we knew that in advance, and it was the destination that makes it worth it.

Pakenham is a pretty little village on the Mississippi River. No, not the great Mississippi that flows through the United States. This is the Canadian Mississippi... an entirely different waterway. It's a popular day trip from the city of Ottawa, so on a long weekend it was pretty busy.

Beautiful sunny morning.

The cornerstone to this Catholic church was laid in 1892 and the church took 9 years to complete.

Ruth, at the famous five arch bridge.

The Five Arch Stone Bridge was built in 1901. It's the only one of its kind in North America.

Kevin and the bridge over the Mississippi River.

Lots of pretty flowers around town.

The Mississippi River.

We did a total of 28 kms (17.4 miles) there and back.

After lunch we had to take the little red car back to the car rental office on the east side of Ottawa. It's a bit of a drive from Galetta! 132 kms (82 miles) round trip. But it had to be done. Part of the deal was that I had to renew the contract at the end of the first month. And our car rental insurance through the credit card is only valid for 45 days, so I used a different card for the second contract.

By the time we got back, the clouds had moved in and it was pouring with rain! What a change compared to the morning!

Today is looking like a decent day with a high of 21C (70F). Lindsey and Justin are coming up with the kids for an overnight visit.

  1. I used to swim at the falls past the bridge and working at Nicholson Sundries was my first 'real' job!

    1. Yep, that was definitely a popular place for swimming. Nicholson's used to be where you got the really huge and inexpensive ice cream cones if I am not mistaken. They used to have really big lineups because they were so popular, now Scoops has taken the ice cream business over. :-)

  2. An area we are unfamiliar with. We'll have to put it on our travel itinerary.
    Nice that you stayed dry.
Be Safe and Enjoy the visit.

    It's about time.

  3. What beautiful pictures of the church and the bridge! Really enjoying your meanderings around the Galetta and Ottawa area that we may never get to see ordinarily.

    1. Thank you Lynnette, there is definitely some nice places around here to explore. I really wish that we had more time to go to different places to show you our readers, unfortunately we have work here at my Dad's house that needs to get done.

  5. I drive by there quite often on my way to Almonte, but have never actually gone into Pakenham. If the weather is decent tomorrow we might just have to take a wee tour.

    1. Pakenham has some nice old houses and buildings in the village, as well as Scoops for ice cream. You need to make sure to stop there for one. :-)
