Another day on the ranch

We woke up to a strong north wind yesterday and the wind got stronger as the day went on. Fortunately, it was a clear blue sky. But even with the high of around 68F (20C) it felt cool all day.

We did get out for a short hike. I didn't measure it, but it was probably about 3.5 miles (5 kms). Oh, but before that there were chores to do. First up was to bottle feed a calf!

The young calf's mom was found dead, with the carcass already being attacked by the coyotes. So they have been bringing up the calf by bottle feeding it. They have named him Jack!

Ruth, bottle feeding Jack.

He's hungry!

Denise having a turn.

Cisco with her foal.

Sage is 3 weeks old.
I will get some more pics another day when they are outside.

Next, they went out in the feed truck to see the herd.

Filling up the feed truck.

Hmm. Maybe I'll get a chance to drive this tank if they need some dirt moved around!

We headed out for our walk.

Different looking cactus.

Scenery along the way.

You could get lots of nice dry firewood from his old tree.

Red winged blackbird.

This big bull was on the other side of a fence.

We were told they won't bother us, but they sure are big!

Road to nowhere?

Did some Amazon shopping in the afternoon. I spent a lot of that time researching a new smartphone. Man, there are a lot of choices. You don't need to spend lots of money these days to get a lot of bells and whistles. I chose a phone at the low end of the "mid price" range. When it arrived next week, I'll show you what I bought.

This morning we are going to get the bikes out. The wind has died down and it's looking like a beautiful day! Maybe we'll see where that road to nowhere goes!

    1. You bet we are, we have been told about the snakes.

It is a wonderful area to hunker down and the fact that there is lots of hiking that we can do and that we have the place pretty much all to ourselves, just makes it all the better. :-)

  3. This post brought back fond memories of bottle (and bucket) feeding a calf in the early morning when I was a schoolkid. The calf would get all excited when she saw us coming, and invariably butt the bucket while she was trying to drink out of it. I can't tell you how many times I got on the schoolbus, streaked with milk! (And the powdered mix doesn't smell that great, either.)
'Baby' grew up to be a huge cow, and would come running whenever she saw us.

    1. So happy that we good bring back some good memories of your youth, Jack, is much the same as your little bottle feed calf, he comes running when he sees us come and he really likes being petted and scratched.

Arin said that they just may keep this little guy because he would be a good "tamer" of the herd when he gets older.

  4. Suggested title for one of your day’s blog entry:

    “Meanwhile back at the ranch....”

    :)

  6. I will be interested to hear what smartphone you went with. I bought an Moto Play G7 last year (unlocked GSM) and love it. VERY inexpensive but has everything I need. The camera isn't great, but that's what a real camera is for. :-)

    1. Lol, we got the one you got, but Kevin bought the Motorola Moto G7 Power one because the reviews say it has a great battery life. The phone Kevin has now doesn't the greatest camera in it either, we don't use the camera on the phone much anyways like you said that is what a real camera is for. :-)
