Afternoon entertainment, followed by steaks for dinner

Friday started off overcast, and we had a few light showers throughout the day. So we didn't plan anything other than going into town to the butcher. Everybody wanted to cook steaks over the fire, so we put in a big order at the local butcher and a few of us walked over to pick it up.

Most of us wanted rib eye. It's not normal in Mexico to cut them thick... thin is much more common here. So if you want them thick, you pretty much have to specifically ask for that.

It took a few tries, but eventually the butcher understood what we wanted.

Boneless rib eye steak.

The steak in the photo above cost 70 pesos ($4.90 CAD, $3.75 USD). It was big enough that Ruth and I split it. For that price, we might go back and buy some more today!

Our hosts Bonnie and Samantha are very active in bringing tourism to the area. So they have a lot of connections, and one suggestion they made was that we might want to see a local dance troupe that specializes in native dance from the Chiapas state area. Originally, we were quoted 300 pesos per person and we all thought that was too much, but they called back and offered to do it for 150 pesos ($10.50 CAD, $8.00 USD) per person so we agreed to that.

It made for an interesting happy hour!

We had to give thanks to the gods of the east, south, west, and north.

And we gave thanks to the earth as well.

And of course thanks to the sky also!

Then they did some dancing.

I took a video for you... turn up your volume...

Then, we all had to be "cleansed", to rid ourselves of bad spirits. It is an old native custom here. They have some kind of nice smelling smoke that they wave around your body and then blow a shell horn to scare the bad vibes away.

I don't think Ruth had any bad spirits!

They spent a little more time on me!

Then, they did a demonstration of the ball game that was common in Aztec and Mayan times. It was starting to get dark though and the pictures were a little fuzzy.

I did get one decent shot.

An interesting afternoon for the group!

Then, we cooked our steaks over an open fire and had a late dinner. Delicious... as I said, we may go back and buy more!

And in Canada...

Big price drop on the Echo Dot Smart Speaker.

  1. OMG what an interesting day starting with the rib eye steak!!! I remember going to dinner with my two sisters and both ordered T-bone and I ordered the rib eye. They complained about their steaks while I happily gobbled mine. So, I let them taste a piece...they were in heaven. Since then, it's nothing but rib eye. You probably can freeze them and send them home. We get a frozen packaged fish once in while from Alaska whenever our relatives have extras. They fish & filet the fish, freeze it and send to us.

    1. I was a wonderful day once again! We are all certainly enjoying our trip through Mexico once again. :-)

Shipping frozen fish isn't normally a problem between Canada and the USA and probably Mexico too but shipping frozen meat is normally a totally different story, quite often meat is not allowed to cross the border. That can depend on a number of different variables from one year to the next. We will just stick with enjoying a good steak every now and then while we are here in Mexico, it is just easier.

  3. Very interesting. Well worth the pesos for an entertaining evening. I think I saw an evil spirit floating around that looked like Kevin.

    1. It was interesting and we are glad that we had them come. The only thing that we would have enjoyed even more was a bit of an explanation into the meaning behind some of the dances and the cleansing that they did on us.

I have no doubt that you saw it and perhaps a few others, lol. :-)
