New adventures coming up!

Our time in Peru is winding down. Considering this trip was a last minute replacement for what was supposed to be Ecuador/Galapagos, we are sure happy with the way things worked out.

And because it was a last minute thing, we had done absolutely no research into this trip until 48 hours or so before boarding the plane. It was kind of exciting doing it that way!

Our Airbnb in Lima was perfect, and our planned three days there was enough. I don't think that any tourist needs more than three days in Lima!

Of course when you mention Peru, most people don't know much about it except for Machu Picchu. And we weren't that different. But as with any other country, there is more to it than just that one attraction.

And when we came across the city of Huaraz that is located so close to Huascarán National Park it looked like it ticked all our boxes, and we have totally enjoyed our stay.

We've only got two nights left here in Huaraz. So whats the plan after that?

Well, we take the bus back to Lima on Saturday. It arrives around 6:00pm, and we will take a taxi directly to the airport. Our flight doesn't depart until 3:00am Sunday morning (silly o'clock), but there are two different airport lounges that we can use our free passes in to relax at Lima airport!

Our flights take us in to Ottawa Sunday evening and we have a car rental booked there for two days. We'll have a very quick visit with family, and then we are back on a plane again on Tuesday morning, flying to Austin, Texas to meet up with Sherman, our motorhome, who has been patiently waiting for us there since April.

We'll have a week and a half or so to get Sherman into ship shape for his four and a half month tour of Mexico!

So, lots of new adventures coming up!

In the meantime, we still have a couple of days of Peru. Yesterday was a rest day after our tough hike to Laguna Ahuac, but we still managed to walk over 5 kms (3 miles) to pick up a few things in el centro.

We stopped back at the lady who had repaired my shirt. Ruth's hat had developed a problem, and for 3 soles ($1.20 CAD, $0.90 USD) she fixed it right up while we waited!

Our seamstress, fixing Ruth's hat.

We went to our favorite cheese lady too.

Did some other grocery shopping as well, and that's probably the last time. We think we have enough supplies now to do us until we leave.

Back at the apartment, we watched some kind of military marching band head down our street below...

Today, we are going to take a collectivo to a nearby town and just do some exploring. Then this evening we meet our friends Lara and Luca for dinner as they are heading out on the next leg of their trip.

  1. Hi Kevin and Ruth, love to read about your adventures as always. If you don't mind me asking, do you store Sherman in Austin and where. Having family in France, trying to fit a few weeks overseas when we will snowbirding in Texas next winter. Thanks Corinne

    1. He is being stored at a friend's place near Austin. In the past when we have stored Sherman for any length of time in the US, we looked on Craig's List for people advertising storage. We did this in Las Vegas for a month once and it worked out well for us, so you might want to look into that and see if there are any private places nearby for you.

Thanks for following along on our adventures. :-)

  4. Love the seamstress and market. I just finished watching "Andes" on Netflix following the mountain from the southern tip to the three branches that divide and end in the north. Surprisingly Huaraz was one of the cities covered in the documentary. Wow the documentary made me want to take a road trip from south of South America to the northern end following the foot of the Andes Mountains. You only hit a smidgen of the mountain. BTW why fly back to Canada? Could you have flown straight from Peru to Texas? Just wondering.

    1. Yep, we really liked the seamstress too, she did a great job on repairing Kevin's shirt and my hat, and we loved the price.

We just finished watching the Magical Andes on Netflix and loved the show. Like you we would love to travel all the way along the Andes and maybe one day we will do just that. The Andes can vary so much all the way along it's route.

We are flying back to Ottawa because Kevin had booked our flight from Ottawa to Austin a very long time ago when he saw the flight on at a good deal, this was before we even had a clue that we would be traveling first to Ecuador and then Peru when the Ecuador trip had to be cancelled.

  5. I've watched a ton of videos about Machu Picchu but I've never seen or heard of Huaraz. So maybe it's not always best to do a lot of planning. I mentioned to you guys three cities that I had visited for work/pleasure but I would have traded those for your hiking adventure. So when someone says, "You didn't visit "X" place while you were there?" we all have a reference :)

    1. And that is the case with most people! Huaraz, is really only known to the diehard hikers. We would have no problem staying here even longer, there are still so many trails going to beautiful glacial lakes and gorgeous views that we just haven't had the time to see. Kevin and I could easily come back to Peru and spend a good couple of months just exploring this country, it is a very diverse country with lots of different mircoclimates, from the very high mountains, to the tropical jungle to the desert and of course the coastline. There is definitely a lot more to Peru than just Machu Picchu.
