Planning for Mexico

We are returning to Mexico again this coming winter. And like last year, we are taking seven other RV's with us.

But this time, we're mixing things up a little bit. First of all, the trip will be 136 days from the time we cross the border, so we will be in Mexico about 4 1/2 months.

And, three of the seven participants in this upcoming trip are returning members from last year. Yes, they had such a good time exploring Mexico by RV with us that they wanted to come back and do it again!

So because of that, we had to switch things up a little bit. It's an adventurous route. Taking a group of 8 RV's to places that are off the beaten path and rarely see one RV, let alone a group of 8 together is going to be challenging to accomplish at times!

We're going to try and stay in some more of Mexico's state and national parks. I say try, because unlike Canada and U.S. public parks, they do not have areas specifically geared towards RV camping in Mexico. So we may arrive at some and won't know until we get there if they can accommodate us. There will be some last minute changes along this route!

Here's a rough idea of what we've got planned...

Here's a link to the map itself so that you can zoom in and get more detail if you wish...

And as I say... it's not written in stone, and I'm sure there will be some changes as we go along.

The highlights that we are looking forward to?
  • A return to the Copper Canyon
  • Christmas at Valle de Juarez
  • Our 5th visit to see the Monarch Butterflies, this time at a new location for us.
  • A return to the Hogar Infantil Orphanage in Ocozocuatla
  • Los Mármoles National Park
Just over two months until that adventure begins. Really excited about it because we think we've got a group of adventurous people!

But before that... we have a three week trip to Ecuador coming up! We honestly haven't spent any time planning this trip at all. In fact, other than the airfare, the only thing we have booked is a one week stay in Quito with a local family when we arrive.

It's a beautiful September day here in the Ottawa area... going out for a 5 km (3 mile) power walk!

HOT DEAL.... Camco's popular Rhinoflex 15' RV Sewer Hose Kit with Fittings. At this price, you should pick one up even if you don't yet need one!

And in Canada...

  2. My partner and I truck camper-ed through Mexico last winter and found some of your posts very helpful, so thank you. I just wanted to make a suggestion - I seem you're going to be very close to Sierra de los Organos park when you're in Durango. We stayed there one night on our way back and it was a highlight of our trip. Beautiful, quiet, and I think they could certainly accommodate the RV's. Hope you have a great adventure!

    1. We are so happy that you found some our post helpful on your trip last winter, that is one of the many reasons that we blog about our adventures so that we can supply helpful information to others following behind us.

We were at Sierra de los Organos National Park back in April 2018 for two nights. We loved it there. Here is our post about our full day at the park, the post before also has a few pictures of the park when we arrived there. www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2018/04/fantastic-day-at-mexico-national-park.html

  3. Allow some time for the Big Bend area of Texas. It might be a good idea to organize your group here at the Lost Alaskan RV Park in Alpine. I suspect you probably have already investigated many such logistical things. The Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and the Fort Davis Mountains State Park oh have very good hiking trails and such. Alpine would also seem to be the last stop with significant shopping and such before you got to Ojinaga. Plenty other things here too. Chris and Juan seemed to enjoy it.If nothing else, I look forward to seeing you guys again as you wander through.

    1. Unfortunately we aren't going to have a lot of time. We get back to Sherman on Nov. 4th and then we have to make our way to Presidio, Texas before Nov. 15th. No doubt we will have a little clean up to do with Sherman when we arrive back in Texas that will take a couple of days and somewhere along the road we need to get Sherman checked out mechanically and get anything fixed before crossing into Mexico which I am sure will cost us a few more days of travel time. Originally Kevin had us meeting at Big Bend National Park for a few days to get acquainted and do some hiking together but there was going to be a problem trying to get us all booked into the park but Kevin can't remember what the issue was and that's when we decided on crossing at Presidio. If we have time we will definitely try to stop at at least one of the three parks. I know that Big Bend National Park is high on our list to visit some day!

Thanks for the suggestion of using Alpine as a last stop for any stocking up that we might want to do.

We are looking forward to this winter's trip, I am sure that we will supply you with some good reading over the winter.:-)

    1. I would highly doubt it because we like to pick routes that are off the beaten path so a smaller rig is needed. Last year we put 32' as the being the largest we would take and for this year's route 28' is the largest. Also we never know from one year to the next if we will even do another caravan trip. Having said that, if you are interested in doing a caravan trip down to Mexico, let us know and we can forward you on to a caravan company that runs tours in Mexico and you would have no problem joining with a rig your size.
