Why are the beaches empty?

We drove into the town of Huskisson, and found a sunny spot to warm up first thing this morning. And it didn't take long... with another day of blue sky and sunshine in the forecast, we were soon ready to open the camper door and let the sun shine in.

After breakfast, we went for a walk to get the blood flowing.

Even though there seemed to be a lot of people around, the beaches are still very empty.

The harbor at Huskisson.

Just another beautiful Australia beach.

Why are the beaches empty?

Because there are 10,685 different beaches!

Do you know how many beaches that is? If you went to a different beach every day of the year, it would take you 29 years to see them all! (Thanks to reader Corinna for pointing that out!)

Plus, it's still winter.

Oh... there is somebody on the beach!

We drove over to Boonderee National Park and paid the $13 AUD ($11.75 CAD, $8.75 USD) vehicle entrance fee.

Beautiful colored water and bright white sand.

We saw two other people the whole time at this location.

We had some lunch and then went for a 6 km (3.8 mile) hike.

Looking across to Bowen Island.

And further across the bay to Point Perpendicular Lighthouse

Steep cliffs and sea caves.

Purple flag flower in the iris family.

Kangaroo Tails.  A type of tree grass.

There was a forest fire through here many years ago.

Ruth, and the scribbly gum tree.

Why do they call it a scribbly gum tree?

Because of the scribbles left on the tree from the scribbly moth larvae.

Last stop of the afternoon was the ruins from an old lighthouse. It was operational for about 39 years in the late 1800's, but when the new one was built at Point Perpendicular, they blew this one up (literally, with dynamite) to prevent confusion.

The remains of the lighthouse.

There is a ship way off in the distance.

Let's see if I can zoom in on it for you...

Man, it looks well loaded!

What a beautiful day we had. Blue sky, sunshine, and a high of 21C (70F).

Pretty much perfect.

  1. Beautiful part of our vast country... but yes it’s winter ❄️ even in the summer the water in the south coast is chilly. Winter months all the beach lovers with the time to travel are up north. Such a shame your trip is ending soon and you haven’t seen the outback or far north of Australia. Next time??

    1. Yes, it is very beautiful but we have no doubt that there are still many more beautiful areas that we haven't seen. Lots to look forward on a return visit sometime in the future. It is hard to believe how fast the time has gone by but we sure have seen a lot and even in the cooler weather it has been a great trip and one that we will never forget.

  2. What beautiful pictures! You wonder what happens to one of those cargo ships when they go over and drop all of those containers. They're down there somewhere!

    1. Thank Chris, it is easy to have great pictures when you have such beautiful scenery to start with. :-)

I bet it is a very, very rare occurrence that a cargo ship ever goes over!

    1. Yep, there sure is and we have hardly even seen a quarter of this beautiful country. It would take us years to see everything that we would like to see here. Lots of reasons to return again someday.

Kevin loves the zoom on this camera, it really is amazing!
