You can't see everything!

Australia is almost the same size as the lower 48 of the United States... so when people ask "how much of it are you going to see in ten weeks...?" We reply "not very much".

It took us four weeks to explore South Korea... a country half the size of Kansas! So to see everything we want to see in Australia would take us two years... or more... of steady traveling.

So right now, we're not worried about seeing everything. We know that we can't.

So we're just seeing what there is to see along the way. And if we don't get very far, or if we happen to miss something, we're not worried. You can't see everything.

Sometimes, there is nothing to see!

We made our way to the town of Wellington that sits on the Murray River. I had seen a parking area at the boat ramp that looked like it led to a walking path along the river, so we stopped there to get some exercise.

Ruth, at the entrance to the River Bend Heritage Trail.

The weather is just okay. Highs of around 15C (60F), which is great for hiking. Only problem is that it rains regularly... just a shower that usually lasts only five or ten minutes and then it clears up again... until the next rain shower goes through. So, the temperature is fine, but we could do without the regular rain. Yes, most of our photos show blue skies... but it's not always that way.

Still, it's better (in our opinion) than the baking hot temperatures they get in the November through March time frame.

Scenery along the way.

Australian white ibis.

Part of the trail goes on a levee. It's flat, and not that scenic.

We were hoping to see more bird life, but there wasn't much interesting.
Still, we ended up doing about 6 kms (3.7 miles).

Lots of cows though!

Straw-necked ibis.

What are you lookin' at mate?

More scenery.

This beautiful red flowering aloe vera plant decorated the entrance to someone's driveway.

Back with Bundy and Joyce, we had some lunch with a view of the river.
We could have easily overnighted in this spot.

Once again, the park next door has very nice bathroom facilities.

We took the ferry across the Murray River.
Just us, and a big truck.

Rainbow along the way.

Hmm... this looks like a pretty good overnight spot.

Yep, this will do!

We're at the Meningie Hill Lookout, near the town of Meningie, South Australia (pop 1,200). There is a viewpoint looking in all directions, plus a few walking trails. We had an afternoon nap, and we'll do some of the trails before we leave in the morning.

Rainbow in the distance.

Ruth making dinner.

Despite the cool daytime temperatures, it doesn't get much worse over night. Lows are around 9C (48F), so when you're under the covers and sleeping, it's quite comfortable. We bought a Mr. Heater Little Buddy, but we haven't had to use it yet. The small space in the camper warms up quickly just cooking dinner!

Here's our drive today...

Monday's drive, 82 kms (51 miles).

Nice price drop on the 3 Qt 9-in-1 Instant Pot. Hasn't been this cheap since Black Friday!

And in Canada...

    1. Well it is definitely one of a few trips of a lifetime for us and we are enjoying every minute of it, even the cool damp weather we are having.

  2. See you are already on to the Stanley wines. Probably one of the best of the cheaper ones. So much choice on places to free camp in Aus and you haven't even got to the really good ones yet. Agree there is too much to see, which is why we have to keep going back. Hope you end up feeling the same.

    1. Yes, we took you suggestion. The Chardonnay is nice but we couldn't find the red that you liked so we got another one, it is fine but just a touch on the sweet side, so we generally have that one as our "happy hour" glass. :-)

Nice to hear that we have lots to look forward too. I think we knew we would love it here even before we came, and yes we will be back again and probably again after that. There is certainly lots to see.

  3. Australia is close in size (land mass) to Canada, while Canada is a much larger land mass than the USA. Just thought I would mention that for your Canadian followers.
Australia is a beautiful country you will need to return. We really enjoyed our trip there several years ago we were there in Jan and Feb weather was pleasant to too hot. We also enjoyed New Zealand just beautiful. We are also looking forward to returning.Enjoy your time there!

    1. Kevin had it right, Australia is close in size to the United States, which is the third largest country and Australia is the sixth largest. I think most Canadians are aware that Canada is the second largest country in the world. ;-)

Yes, Australia is a beautiful country and yes, I am sure that we will return a few times in order to try and see as much of it as we can. I think January and February would be too hot for us, we love to hike but not when the weather is hot, this temperature is almost perfect for us if it weren't for the wind and the rain.

New Zealand is on our list of places to visit, so we will hopefully make it there one day as well. Again, another hikers paradise. :-)
