When life hands you lemons...

...you need to make lemonade!

So yesterday, we made our way to the fancy new medical center in the town of Leader, Saskatchewan (pop 870). About an hour drive, but worth it compared to having to go back to the hospital in Swift Current!

The doctor in Leader agreed that the replacement antibiotics weren't doing the job the way they should, and gave Ruth a prescription to Cipro. Ruth had used Cipro before to fix a kidney infection, and it was fixed quickly and with no noticeable side effects.

He also gave her a letter for the insurance company so that we can get reimbursed for cancelling the cheap Australia flights that we had booked. So really, this kidney infection showed up at a good time, as if there was any bright side to getting a kidney infection!

So, the Australia flights are now cancelled.

But, that doesn't mean we are not going there. It's just delayed a little bit until I receive my visa.

In the mean time... we're not going to hang around Canada.

We booked one way flights to Singapore for $477 CAD ($358 USD), leaving Calgary on Monday. This will enable us to explore Singapore and some of Malaysia for a few weeks if we have to. And when the visa gets approved it's easy and relatively cheap to fly from Singapore to Adelaide, Australia.

Calgary to Los Angeles,
Los Angeles to San Francisco,
San Francisco to Singapore.

San Francisco to Singapore is one of the world's longest non stop flights. 17 hours I think it is.

So... now I need to find us somewhere to stay in Singapore!

  1. We loved Singapore (where everything works) but had just come from a few months sailing around Indonesia (where nothing works) during the time of the East Timor riots (where they were killing people). Singapore was lovely, but busy. Be sure to go to Raffles and at least have lunch there. Everything else is expensive. Malaysia was also lovely and you will enjoy touring around there too.

    1. We have heard good things about Singapore, so we are really looking forward to our couple of days there. Seems like we will out of luck in trying to go to Raffles as it is closed until August 2019 for restoration, besides it looks like it was well above our price range for a meal out. ;-)

We are certainly looking forward to exploring Malaysia but unfortunately we will only have a week or so there. I am sure it will be one of those places that we will want to return to so that we can spend more time there, this trip will only be a little tease for us.

    1. Thank you Dan! I finally feel like I am on the mend. I managed to get through yesterday with only one Advil and so far this morning I have no headache, my fingers are crossed that the headache is gone for good!

  3. Yay!!! I get to see Singapore!! LOL Traveling on your coat tails of coarse. Love this. I have a friend who just returned from traveling through there including Indonesia, Malaysia. He shared a lot of photos & stayed at Airbnb & couch surfers. The families he stay with were awesome because they also took him to areas where tourist don't visit. I'm so glad everything worked out for the better.

    1. Your friend sounds like he travels much the same way as we do. We are really looking forward to this little addition to our original trip to Australia but we won't have the time to explore Singapore or Malaysia the way we normally would like too but at least we will see some of these places. I have no doubt that we will end up returning to Malaysia to see it properly another time.

    1. Thank you very much! We pride ourselves on the fact that we can be so flexible, it makes traveling so much better that way. :-)

  5. When we went to Australia 6 years ago we didn't realize we needed visas until we went to check in for our flight! We were able to get them and pay for them online while at the airport. It only took a few minutes and we were on our way.

    1. Yes, for the majority of people it is that easy. Mine came through in less than 30 seconds, unfortunately it wasn't so easy for Kevin. We have the visa now, so we are good to go just a little later than we had hoped for.

    1. We are only going to spend about 2 or 3 nights in Singapore then we are going to move over to Malaysia where it is much cheaper.

I am sure it will all work out and yes, I am finally on the mend. I should hopefully be good to go on Monday. :-)

  8. What a perfect place to say, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Looking forward to seeing Asia through your eyes. Feel better, Ruth.

    1. Yep, and we think we are pretty good about making lemonade! :-)

Unfortunately we won't really be spending too much time in Asia on this trip but it will give us a change of scenery and culture.

    1. Thank you! We have some books, and lots of things to read on the computer and probably some movies as well. We have done a 17 hour flight twice before going from New York City to Johannesburg and back, and yeah it's a long flight.

  10. You guys are absolutely amazing. Most people would have given up a long time ago. Instead you guys just add more to the pot and give it a little stir. You are such an inspiration to us all. Have a safe trip wherever you are going. Hope Ruth feels better soon. And Happy Anniversary!!

    1. We aren't going to let something like that bring us down. Yes, it was frustrating but there is nothing that we could do about either Kevin's visa or my kidney infection except to wait so we just suck it up and look for an alternative because there is always one out there. Life's too short to not enjoy it to the fullest.

I am finally starting to see an improvement. The pounding headache was more my issue once the antibiotics started to work on the kidney infection, but I just couldn't get rid of the headache, even with painkillers so I am so happy to see an improvement in that department. I am pretty sure with a couple more days of rest I should be good to go, especially for that one long haul flight. Thanks for thinking of us Lorne.
