Good to get our morning exercise in...

After a rainy Saturday afternoon and evening, the forecast was for clearing skies on Sunday. And, Sunday did end up being a nice day, but the morning was still a bit cloudy and cool.

We had stayed in downtown Ottawa at our son's apartment located close to the Rideau Canal, so we went for a nice walk along the canal in the morning.

Despite the cloudy start to the day, there were quite a few people out running, walking, and biking on the various pathways by the canal. They even close several of the roadways in Ottawa on Sunday mornings during the summer season to allow people to more easily go out and get some exercise.

Lots of tulips.

We walked the lower path where there weren't so many people.

More tulips.

 More tulips.

Old downtown neighborhoods.

New condo being built.
Looks like it's going to be an interesting building.

The Canadian Museum of Nature.

We ended up walking 4.5 kms (2.8 miles) so it was good to get our morning exercise in.

Then, we were off to the west end to meet my mom and two sisters and nephew for lunch. We went to Mr. Mia's, an Indian restaurant near my mother's apartment. I had the chicken curry and Ruth had mulligatawny soup and tikka chicken with a side salad. Nice lunch, unfortunately we forgot to take any photos with my side of the family! We'll have to remember to do that when we return in early October!

After lunch, we drove up to Arnprior to visit Ruth's dad. We took him out to a local park by the river and went for a short stroll.

Today, we're going to take Ruth's dad up to the Wheelers Maple Syrup place for some pancakes and maple syrup for lunch. Yum!

  1. The tulips are beautiful. I too walked this morning about 2 miles...the sun came up on me but made it home before it got hot. I'll probably walk in the park early this evening to get in my other mile in.

    1. And we didn't even make it to the area where there are lots and lots of tulip displays. Just not enough time! We didn't have to worry about it getting too hot here, at least not yet. :-)

    1. I wish we could have made it to Dow's Lake in Ottawa, they have gorgeous displays of the tulips there but we just didn't have the time.

  4. I skated on that canal back in the 90s... when it was frozen of course. Great city Ottawa.

  6. We have never been to Ottawa (guess we should make time for it), but I'd love to be walking by the canal. Ice skating on the canal in the winter?

    1. We highly recommend a visit to Ottawa, it really is a beautiful city. Lots of green space and beautiful old houses in the downtown areas. Lots to see and do, great museums and it doesn't take long to get into the country for some great hiking.

In the fall they drain the canal and prep it for the winter and when winter comes what water is left in the canal freezes and they are able to flood it during the night to replenish the surface. At one time is was the largest skating rink in the world at 7.8 km (4.8 miles), not sure if it still holds that title though. They even have a winter festival that centers around the canal with all kinds of winter activities.

  7. Nice to see the tulips since there aren't any in Florida! ;-) I like the idea of a pancake and maple syrup lunch (or any meal, really!!!)
