Pelee Island visit?

We've been wanting to visit Pelee Island for a long time. But Pelee Island is located in the most southern part of Lake Erie, and the access point to the ferry is located in Ontario, just southeast of Detroit.

And we don't make it down that way very often.

A few years back (2009 maybe?) we met Heinz and Ulli who were staying at Hacienda Contreras, an RV park in Mexico that we all loved. It turns out that Heinz and Ulli have a home on Pelee Island, and that's where they live during the summer season. They've often said that we have an open invitation to come and visit whenever we want to, but we never seem to make it down that way.

So we decided that if we're ever going to visit, we're going to have to make a special trip there!

Pelee Island is located at the south end of Lake Erie.

We've got a car rental booked for next month while we're in Ottawa, and Ruth's sister lives in Hamilton, just west of Toronto. So I think what we're going to do is to take five days or so and go down to Ruth's sister's for a night, and then carry on to Pelee Island.

We heard back from Heinz and Ulli this morning, and it looks like we're good to go.

Sounds like another great road trip!

A fantastic bargain on a small quiet generator for those of you who want to do some dry camping but don't have solar panels. This thing sells for $380 at Home Depot. So for this deal price, you could afford to spend the extra $23 or so and get a four year warranty!

  1. Sounds like it will be a wonderful visit love the Pelee island area, we have been down that way to Point Pelee but the time we wanted to go to the Island a tornado came through the area and the ferry was cancelled.

    1. We really hoping that we will be able to make it there, it definitely looks like a real pretty place.

You are fairly close to that area every summer, you could always choose another time to visit. :-)

  3. I wouldn't consider Pelee Island to be the most southern part of Lake Erie... Unless perhaps you happen to be Canadian :)

    1. Wait! I guess you can say it is *in* the most southern part of the lake---which you did, lol. Certainly THE most southern part of Canada, which up until now, I had always thought was the tip of Point Pelee.

    2. You are always so technical Doug! ;-) Yes, he should have said that Pelee Island is the most southern point of Canada and it just happens to be in Lake Erie.

  4. That sounds like fun. We used to go to Put-in-Bay Island growing up on the US side near Pelee Island. Would be interesting to get to Pelee Island one day.

    1. We are looking forward to it, just trying to figure out what dates would work best for us, our friends, my sister and my Dad.

It will be interesting to see if there are many differences between the two islands.

  5. I went to Pelee Island in 1980 for work (vegetation mapping). The one thing that sticks in my mind is that there were a lot of pheasant farms. There is an annual hunt, although apparently it isn't as popular as it used to be.

  7. We really enjoyed the island this past June and are confident you will too - especially when you have friends who know it well and are eager to show you the sights. Enjoy!

    1. I am sure we will enjoy it as well but we won't have as long to see it as you did though. We will only have a couple of days. Hopefully we can get there before the winery closes for the season on Oct. 8th.
